New "Snap-In" Mounting Simplifies Integration of SQUIGGLE® Piezoelectric Micro Motors into OEM Products

With its new stainless steel housing, the SQL-1.8-6-12-SS piezo micro motor measures only 2.7 x 2.8 x 6 mm; mounts easily with tabs or adhesive

Victor, NY - March 23, 2009 - A new stainless steel housing for the SQL-1.8 SQUIGGLE micro motor simplifies mounting of this patented piezoelectric motor into miniature OEM products, New Scale Technologies announced today. The model SQL-1.8-6-12-SS SQUIGGLE motor measures only 2.7 x 2.8 x 6 mm including housing. This is still 25% to 50% thinner and up to ten times smaller in length x width than competing micro motors. With new mounting tabs and a solid bottom surface, the SQL-1.8-6-12-SS SQUIGGLE motor is easily integrated into high-volume miniature products such as tiny optical systems, medical devices, micro-robotic instruments and more.

A variety of suggested mounting techniques include the use of snap clamps to hold the mounting tabs; epoxy or adhesive tape to bond the bottom of the housing to a system structure; and several different screw-on clamping options. An application note describing the various mounting methods in detail is available online at http://www.newscaletech.com/app_notes....

A 3D CAD file for the new motor housing is also available for download.

SQL-1.8-6-12-SS SQUIGGLE motors feature 6 mm travel range, 0.5 micrometer resolution, speeds greater than 7 mm/sec, and stall force of 30 grams force. New Scale developed the new housing to ensure optimal motor performance and simplify mechanical integration for OEMs, while maintaining the small footprint of the "the world's smallest linear motor."

Pricing and availability

A complete evaluation kit including an SQL-1.8-6-12-SS motor, a motor controller, New Scale Pathway software and all connector cables is available now starting at $450. The kits are available for purchase online at:

About New Scale Technologies

New Scale Technologies (http://www.newscaletech.com) creates disruptively small motion systems based on our patented piezoelectric SQUIGGLE® motor, the world's smallest linear motor, and TRACKER(TM) position sensor. The ultrasonic SQUIGGLE motor is smaller, more precise, less expensive, more robust and more power-efficient than other micro motors. The TRACKER position sensor integrates a magnetic sensor with on-chip digital encoder, for smaller size and higher resolution than miniature optical encoders. We create complete motion systems integrating motor and sensor technology with supporting electronics (ASICs) developed with our partner austriamicrosystems.

New Scale's micro motors, encoders and micro-actuator modules enable design engineers to create smaller products including mobile phone cameras, electronic locks and intelligent fasteners, nano-scale fluid control including lab-on-a-chip systems, medical devices including miniature drug pumps and endoscopes, optics and imaging systems, automotive modules, lasers, aerospace and defense systems, cryogenic and MRI-compatible instruments, and consumer electronics including micro fuel cells.

SQUIGGLE is a registered trademark and TRACKER and New Scale Pathway are trademarks of New Scale Technologies, Inc.
