BASF Introduces Sustainable, Point-of-Sale Paint Tinting System

High performance PureOptions(TM) colorants are zero VOC, low odor, APEO-free

FLORHAM PARK, NJ, March 5, 2009 -- For coatings manufacturers, the emergence of regulations in many states to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in house paints creates new formulation challenges. Since VOCs result from additives used to deliver functional benefits, formulators need to satisfy environmental needs without sacrificing performance.

To help address this need, BASF has introduced PureOptions colorants - a sustainable, point-of-sale tinting system that can be used to produce a wide range of paint colors with low odor and zero VOC content per U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 24.

PureOptions colorants are designed for optimal paint performance, maintaining critical properties, such as gloss, color reproducibility, and blocking, without adding VOC content. PureOptions colorants are also free of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs), substances that are considered to be unfriendly to the environment.

PureOptions colorants balance historical paint formulations with new performance and sustainability demands. They are produced using the same high-quality processes as BASF's other colorants, giving paint manufacturers a high quality alternative with less environmental impact.

"PureOptions colorants offer a sustainable solution that benefits paint manufacturers, but retailers and consumers as well," said Thierry Chevrier, Director, Coating & Plastic Chemicals, for BASF in North America.

Retailers will be able to use PureOptions colorants with most current in-store tinting systems. In fact, BASF has developed a patent-pending plastic container with a re-sealable lid that allows for efficient transfer of PureOptions colorants into point-of-sale dispensers. The new container enables retailers to reduce the chances of contamination or spillage.

With PureOptions colorants, retailers can also avoid tip-drying issues that occur with other zero VOC colorant systems, without the need for special equipment to prevent drying and clogging at the tip of the dispensing nozzle.

For consumers, indoor paints with higher VOC content often have an unpleasant smell. Zero VOC content results in low odor paint, to create a more pleasant painting experience.
