Mantis Operator Interface Uses Bar Code Reader to Prevent Packaging Errors

On Display At Pack Expo October 29 - November 2
Booth S-996

WEI, Elk Grove, Illinois will co-exhibit the Mantis Operator Interface at the Pack Expo trade show McCormick Place, Chicago booth S-996 (Datalogic, Inc.) The Mantis Operator Interface is a stand alone bar code verifier that performs go / no go print quality analysis as well as match code functions for 100% automated bar code verification. The Mantis answers the question for FDA compliance manager, packaging engineer or quality control manager is "Are my bar codes readable and correct?" The system is pre configured to work with RS232 bar code readers such as Datalogic and requires no programming or configuration. New Ethernet client "Brand Counting" application software will also be on display.

The Mantis Operator Interface now uses the latest vision based tools such as CCD cameras as well as traditional laser based bar code scanners for 100% unattended bar code verification. New FDA rules regarding 100% unattended label inspection and electronic record keeping has driven demand for an easily configured vision based system with packaging machine control functions. As an Ethernet client, the Mantis Operator Interface logs data regarding start & stop times, error logs production counts and personnel information.

A new level of ease of operation will be demonstrated. Hand scanning, selector switch input and command codes for "learning" the correct bar code will be demonstrated. Visual, audible and diverter control line alarm functions such as no-read, no-match and batch exceeded will be demonstrated. Electronic management reports showing production data for a packaging line batch of production will also be available.

For contract packagers with frequent product label changes, the Mantis protects against costly label mistakes. In food, beverage and medical packaging operations the Mantis automates an inspection process based upon random sampling by people with an unattended system capable of 100% inspection. As an accessory for in-line printing (ink jet, print and apply) the Mantis safeguards against costs associated with re-packaging, product recall and liability.

National Retailers expect that at the point of sale, UPC codes are scannable and correct for the SKU. Heavy fines are assessed to manufacturers and distributors of product with poorly printed or incorrect bar codes. Between 1993 and 1997 one major retailer collected over $27,000,000 in fines from suppliers. This dollar amount does not include other costs to manufacturers such as product liability, material cost, freight cost and lost customer good will.

More recently, in industries with packaging lines that affect public health, the FDA has enacted regulations which in part tighten packaging and labeling control requirements. This label verification and inspection includes reading both linear and 2-D bar codes on all components. Reference FDA 21 CFR Part 11.
