Gynecare Introduces First and Only Polypropylene Mesh Indicated Specifically for Pelvic Floor Repair

Somerville, NJ (April 28, 2003) - GYNECARE, the women's health division of ETHICON, Inc., has introduced GYNECARE GYNEMESHâ„¢ PS, the first polypropylene mesh support material for female pelvic floor repair. The lightweight material offers permanent yet soft and supple support in a variety of applications including cystocele, rectocele, and vaginal vault suspension.

Designed for easy handling and placement, GYNEMESHâ„¢ PS is constructed of the same material as PROLENE® Polypropylene suture which is proven to be safe and reliable. Its unique design makes it 70 percent more flexible than standard mesh. In addition, the knitted construction allows the surgeon to easily cut the mesh into different sizes and shapes without the mesh unraveling.

"Women are living longer and outliving their tissue," said Vincent Lucente, M.D., a urogynecologist at St. Luke's Hospital, Allentown, PA. "The challenge has been that never before have we had a material that was designed to combine permanent support with the softness and pliability needed in vaginal reconstructive surgery. I believe that GYNEMESHâ„¢ PS offers the pelvic floor surgeon an excellent combination of these qualities."
