Thermo Fisher Scientific Launches New Measuring Mixer & Extruder System for Quality Control

Backwards compatibility concerning hardware, software and measuring results

Karlsruhe, GERMANY and Dusseldorf, GERMANY (October 25, 2007) - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced at the International Plastics and Rubber Trade Fair K 2007 the launch of the Thermo Scientific HAAKE PolyLab QC. This new measuring mixer & extruder system is focused on Quality Control (QC) needs.

The modular torque rheometer can be connected to an interchangeable mixer, single-screw extruder, or conical twin-screw extruder. Based on the system's backwards compatibility, even existing measuring mixers and extruders can be connected.

"We wanted to help customers protect investments they have made in the past." says Markus Schreyer, vice president and general manager of Thermo Fisher Scientific's material characterization business unit. "But investment protection was only one aspect when designing the system. Apart from technical specifications we focused on today's needs in a lab such as limited space, ease-of-use and improved performance."

Customers can choose between a table or floor model that best fits into their lab environment. The system is controlled by the Thermo Scientific HAAKE PolySoft software, designed to have the look and feel of Microsoft® Windows® which speeds up learning. A USB PC interface or optional LAN are available for data collection and control by a host PC.

Measuring data from older torque rheometers can be imported into the new system. As existing measuring mixers or extruders may be used, users can correlate new and old measuring results. Automated software projects and pre-programmed test runs save time and increase reproducibility of measuring results. Devices like mixers or extruders are automatically recognized through the plug & play software concept. Individual limits of the measuring systems are identified by the software and set as alarm values, dramatically simplifying trials and increasing precision and standardization of measurements in QC.

QC staff now can characterize a sample's properties by gas flow, electric conductivity or capillary viscosity measurements. More information on the new HAAKE PolyLab QC as well as new trends in rheometry and compounding, or measuring mixer & extruder systems, is provided in hall 10, booth A60 at K 2007.
