Two New Indexable Drills, Array Of Options Broaden Application Range

Valenite LLC has introduced both inch and metric versions of a new indexable drill lineup that, with multiple insert grades, chipbreaker geometries, and depth of drilling options, has expanded the application versatility and scope of operation for the firm's ValDRILL(TM) products. The new drills offered, which includes the metric units developed by Valenite's European partner, Safety incorporate a wide range of design and construction features that deliver performance enhancements such as high productivity, output quality, long tool life and cost savings. The selection of available working diameters and the wide extent of uses-in a variety of materials and in numerous process conditions-augments Valenite's ValDRILL product mix to encompass the full ISO range of drilling situations, including such applications as blind holes, pilot hole drilling, drilling to and thru cross holes, off-center drilling and interrupted cut plunging, and starting holes on inclined surfaces.

The two series of drills provide diameter capacities from 0.500 inches to 1.187 inches with the ValDRILL models, and in sizes of 12 to 30mm offered by Safety's Silver Drill metric drills. The metric diameter drills are available in two variations, with working depths of 2x and 4x the diameter, while the inch-based sizes are offered with 2x, 3x and 4x the diameter depth capacities.

Depending upon diameter range, the drills use one of two insert styles. The LCMT insert style is a two cutting edge design with a large cross section to withstand tough drilling jobs, while the XPMT style insert, in three different sizes, provides four cutting edges to minimize costs, yet is a strong tool design to prevent breakage over successive operations. Application versatility is broadened further by the three distinct insert carbide grades-the VP1310's long wear is ideal for working with cast irons, the VP5320 for steels and stainless steels, and the VP8335 with added toughness for either continuous or interrupted drilling in steels and stainless steels. The grades selections are then pooled with two chipbreaker designs, #47 and #57, to provide optimum results when working with cast iron or steels/stainless steels, respectively, and for most ferrous and non-ferrous materials.

The new drill series were developed with all of the features necessary to provide outstanding overall performance. First, both a special surface treatment and coating process of the drill body are provided to improve rigidity, resistance to wear and erosion from chip evacuation, and to inhibit corrosion. The drill body design also incorporates a step shoulder that allows machine operators to quickly inspect and verify tool diameter without interruption to setup routines, and the step also provides a visual indicator of maximum drilling depth.

The drill bodies have helical flutes that maximize chip evacuation capabilities, especially in deep hole applications. The results are better hole finishes, and a reduction in the risks of tool breakage. The chip evacuation is bolstered by the drills' two flow through coolant holes that assist in thoroughly flushing debris up and out of the hole, plus help to assure longer insert life and drill stability. To further contain costs, the comparable sized drill bodies, regardless of metric or inch measurement system, can use the same size range of insert, thus reducing inventory levels by eliminating duplication of 'similar yet different' tooling needs. The fact that a single insert type and size is used in either the inboard or outboard position provides additional cost savings while helping to error-proof most setup procedures and, again, limit inventory requirements.

The ValDRILL inch drills and the Silver Drill metric series both utilize the advanced
Torx Plus® locking screw and driver system to ensure strong, rigid insert mounting
