Erbium-Doped Fibers operate in C-Band and L-Band.

Press Release Summary:

Rare-earth FS-ER-7A28 and FS-ER-7B28 are for use in C-Band and L-Band, respectively. Both work in erbium-doped optical amplifiers (EDFAs) and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) sources, and use common fusion splicing equipment. High erbium concentration results in fiber lengths that can be substantially reduced to meet desired gain.

Original Press Release:

3M Announces Two New Erbium-Doped Fibers for Operation in C-Band and L-Band

OFC - ANAHEIM, CALIF. & AUSTIN, TEXAS - March 18, 2002 - 3M Optical Components (NYSE: MMM) today launched two new rare-earth fibers designed with higher gain to enable smaller packaging size and reduced system cost. For use in both erbium-doped optical amplifiers (EDFAs) and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) sources, 3M's unique core composition and co-doping process allows higher doping concentrations while maintaining power conversion efficiency. The high erbium concentration results in fiber lengths that can be substantially reduced to meet the desired gain.

The FS-ER-7A28 erbium-doped fiber is designed for use in the C-Band and the FS-ER-7B28 is designed for L-Band applications. These fibers are manufactured with exacting optical and geometrical uniformity tolerances and very tight control on mode field diameter. This results in excellent splice performance to industry standard transmission fibers using common fusion splicing equipment.

3M's dopant process, combined with flexible, state-of-the-art automated manufacturing and strong fiber and material expertise, enables efficient customization of optical properties. To the customer this means design flexibility and decreased lead times on custom fiber.
