MCE-5 VCR Engines Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions While Improving Profitability And Competitiveness
Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) automotive engines are setting the stage for decisive, universal strategies in reducing pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. VCR technology reduces fuel consumption by about 30% while remaining compatible with simple and efficient after-treatment devices like the 3-way catalyst. The MCE-5 VCR engine block from the French company MCE-5 Development is a mechanical solution that allows mass-production of VCR engines under the best conditions while satisfying the demanding profitability criteria required by the car manufacturing industry. The MCE-5 VCR engine block is designed to replace traditional fixed compression engine blocks. Its technology is a comprehensive VCR engine block that integrates power transmission and compression ratio control. It features long-life gears and an exclusive roller-guided piston that is no longer subjected to slap or radial stress. This ensures an exceptional resilience and reliability. MCE-5, therefore, meets one of the greatest challenges facing downsized engines: to present extreme power and torque density while maintaining durability.
The great strength of the MCE-5 VCR engine block is also a product of its crankshaft’s rigidity. Moreover, the main structure gives the hydrodynamic bearings an optimum geometrical environment and a long lifespan.
The new engine block has no negative effects on the other components or the vehicle. Exhaust and transmission connections are precisely the same as those of a conventional engine.
Designed and tested since 1997, the MCE-5 VCR engine block has been improved in successive stages. The new generation is already representative of a version suitable for the market, and its components are manufactured using mass production techniques.
