Active Power Unveils Expanded CleanSource DC Energy Storage Systems as a Robust Alternative to Batteries in UPS/Genset Installations

New Power Ratings Added to Increase Configuration Flexibility and Broaden Reach to 2000kW

AUSTIN, Texas - November 5, 2003 - Active Power (NASDAQ:ACPW), a leading developer of battery-free power quality products, has responded to growing market requirements for continuous power solutions by enhancing their popular CleanSource DC line of battery-free energy storage systems to include expanded power levels and incorporate several changes in the evolving product line. Based on Active Power's proven flywheel technology, the new models provide tightly regulated, adjustable DC voltage to replace or augment batteries configured with uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems backing up critical applications in the 100kW to 2000kW power ranges.

The new and enhanced models are available with unit power ratings of 100, 140, 200, 250, 425 and 500kW, and can be paralleled in combinations up to 2000kW. They accept an input float voltage from 400 to 600VDC to supply a charging current of 15 to 100 Amps per flywheel. User adjustable output voltage can be set from 360 to 550VDC with ±1 percent steady state voltage regulation. Unlike batteries that must be maintained as close as possible to 20°C to avoid performance degradation, the CleanSource DC models are designed to operate comfortably from 0°C to 40°C.

The versatile systems can be configured in several ways to optimize cost effectiveness with the level of power protection needed. In its basic configuration, the CleanSource DC flywheel serves as a low-maintenance, space-saving alternative to the large battery banks traditionally used to store energy for UPS systems. This configuration offers protection from more than 94 percent of power disturbances including short blackouts, brownouts and a variety of common power disturbances. For users requiring continuous operation, the CleanSource DC can be used as a highly reliable bridge between utility power and onsite backup generator to achieve optimized uptime. In the most critical applications, users can install the CleanSource DC with a UPS in a redundant configuration with the existing battery bank or an N+1 array of CleanSource DC units to achieve the highest levels of power availability possible.

From industrial processes, data centers, hospitals and government installations to sensitive broadcast and military applications, the CleanSource DC battery-free technology can dramatically reduce space requirements, temperature restrictions, replacement cycles and maintenance needs while improving UPS system reliability and operational integrity. As with previous generation systems, the new models feature 2-terminal DC connections and can be used with all popular UPS products in these power ranges including Powerware, MGE, and Liebert. Based on an integrated motor-generator flywheel that stores kinetic energy in its constantly spinning, quiet, low-friction steel disc, the CleanSource DC provides energy to the UPS that eliminates more than 94 percent of power disturbances on its own or provides sufficient ride-through to allow time for an engine generator-set to start up and supply continuous power for essential systems. In the battery redundant configuration, the CleanSource DC significantly reduces battery discharge cycles, thus prolonging battery life and preserving capacity.

CleanSource DC Flywheel Energy Storage Systems are available now, and have a lower total lifecycle cost than comparable battery-based systems. Standard product includes local emergency shutdown, serial communications connections, onboard self-diagnostics, LCD monitor and control panel, soft-start UPS integration, programmable auto restart, redundant cooling fans, programmable output and input contacts and adjustable voltage settings. Available options include DC disconnect switch, paralleling capability for up to eight flywheels, remote notification and monitoring, CSView(tm) real-time monitoring software, Remote Emergency Shutdown, MODBUS and SNMP Interfaces and OSHPD seismic anchoring.

With over 400 installations worldwide and more than 7 million hours of field operation, Active Power's products are a proven alternative to problematic battery-based systems. Active Power's CleanSource UPS products also include a number of battery alternatives ranging from 65 kVA to 3600 kVA. Recently recognized by Frost & Sullivan for its ability to satisfy customer needs with new and innovative products, Active Power continues to rapidly expand its product line to address the needs of new market segments and geographies.
