Quick Mount MagnaShear Motor Brakes Easy to Afford and Install, While Oil-Shear Design Reduces Wear, Drive Stress, and Energy Draw

August 2004 - Available in new Quick-Mount versions, MagnaShear electric motor brakes use oil-shear dependability to overcome the short wear life, lost production and high maintenance costs with dry-friction brakes. Ideal for indexing tables, lifts, transfer conveyors, palletizing, and other start/stop and cycling operations, the Quick-Mount MagnaShear brakes come filled with oil, ready to mount, no disassembly required. For even greater simplicity and convenience, they can be ordered pre-assembled with electric motor.

Creative engineering by Force Control Industries uses the brake's fan as a quill clamping device to uniformly clamp hub to motor shaft. The pilotless design allows simple slide-on shaft mounting and brake self-centering. Evenly torquing two bolts on the fan hub automatically centers the brake, enabling it to "float" into position.

The oil-shear brakes avoid heat and wear by operating the friction surfaces in constantly circulating oil. As moving and stationary elements come together, torque is transmitted through viscous shear of the oil film. The smooth oil-shear action delivers many times the friction material life of dry brakes, reduces stress on drives, and carries heat away for dissipation through the brake bodyshell.

Quick-mount MagnaShear units are available in nine spring-set torque ratings from 6 to 86 ft. lb. The spring-set brake stack is engaged when power is supplied, releasing the brake from stopped position. Maximum KE ranges from 7967 to 26,500 ft. lb. Standard MagnaShear models are available for NEMA motor frame sizes 213U, 215U, 213T, 254U, 256U, 254T and 256T, with IEC frames supplied on request.

Manufactured by Force Control Industries, the industry leader in oil-shear brake and clutch/brake technology, MagnaShear units feature compact, multi-disk design that reduces inertia, provides faster response, and packs more braking torque into a smaller diameter configuration. The proprietary design saves space, while reducing motor horsepower and energy draw during drive acceleration.

Simple control logic uses motor starter auxiliary contactors, allowing brakes to run on the same standard power (115 VAC or 230 VAC) as the motor starter coil. Back EMF effect from motor windings is eliminated.

Standard units are fully sealed, assuring high dependability and long service in difficult outdoor environments and indoor applications with high oil, grit, or moisture exposure. Anodized housings are available for caustic exposure or washdown.
