Ampacet Introduces Desiccant Additive Masterbatch for Polyethylene Film to Extend Packaging Shelf Life

Tarrytown, NY, June 13, 2005 - Ampacet has developed a desiccant additive masterbatch for polyethylene film designed to protect packaging from moisture penetration. This masterbatch, Ampacet Product 101499, which reacts with and binds water vapor as it enters a film, can significantly extend the shelf life of foods, Pharmaceuticals and other products that need protection from moisture.

The new product is a stable compound intended for use in translucent and opaque films made of low density and linear low density polyethylene. It can be used in blown and cast films, whether monolayer or multilayer and complies with current federal guidelines for food contact packaging.

"We developed Ampacet 101499 to provide a barrier to water vapor in polyethylene films when moisture sensitivity is a critical issue," says Prakash Patel, Director, R&D. "It can, for instance, keep moisture from affecting hygroscopic medications or the sugar in cookies, sweetened cereals and other dry foods.

"Depending on the nature of the application and the film, this additive masterbatch should be able to extend product shelf life well beyond what is now commonly expected of food packaging using conventional polyethylene. Of course a manufacturer may choose to reduce total raw material cost by down-gauging a film without sacrificing its current level of moisture protection by incorporating this additive."

Ampacet Product 101499 is recommended for use at a let-down ratio of 1 to 3 percent, depending on the level of moisture protection desired.
