Press Release Summary:

Supplied in 5 x 6 mm MLP, FDMS8460 incorporates PowerTrench® MOSFET process technology and features 40 V MOSFET rating. RoHS-compliant product is designed for power supplies, such as DC-DC brick modules and servers, where efficiency and footprint are critical features. RDS(ON) of 2.2 mOhm max and Miller charge (QGD) of 10 nC minimize conduction losses as well as switching losses. Elements of construction include Pb-free terminals and J-STD-020 moisture sensitivity.

Original Press Release:

Fairchild Semiconductor's 40V Synchronous Rectifier Offers Industry's Best Figure of Merit for Switching Designs

The FDMS8460 Improves Efficiency in Switching Designs

San Jose, California - March 20, 2008 - Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) enables designers to achieve higher levels of efficiency in their power designs with its 40V breakdown DC-DC synchronous rectifier. This synchronous rectifier is ideal for power supplies such as DC-DC brick modules and servers where the highest efficiency and the smallest footprint are critical features. The FDMS8460 offers world class RDS(ON) and total gate charge (QG), and provides 20 percent lower Figure of Merit (FOM) compared to other 40V MOSFET solutions. Packaged in an industry standard and green 5mm x 6mm MLP package, this DC-DC synchronous rectifier provides designers the necessary performance and packaging to optimize their designs.

Fairchild's advanced performance PowerTrench® MOSFET process technology enables higher output power levels without increasing the solution footprint. PowerTrench technology produces exceptionally low values for Miller charge (QGD), RDS(ON) and QG, and improves the gate-source charge to gate-drain charge (QGS:QGD) ratio to above one. All of these enhancements result in superior switching performance, avoiding shoot-through and improving thermal efficiencies. The FDMS8460's ultra-low RDS(ON) of 2.2mOhm max and extremely low QGD of 10nC allows conduction losses and switching losses to be drastically reduced. This increases the drain current through the device to improve efficiency and to reduce heat (conduction loss), an important consideration in today's power systems. Its 40V MOSFET rating is essential for the 5V and the 12V output rail voltages typically required in today's DC-DC applications.

The FDMS8460 is part of a comprehensive portfolio of discrete power semiconductors. These products enable high efficiency in computers, automobiles, handsets, power supplies and home entertainment consumer products such as LCD TVs and Class D audio applications.

The FDMS8460 utilizes lead-free (Pb-free) terminals and has been characterized for moisture sensitivity in accordance with the Pb-free reflow requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020. All of Fairchild's products are designed to meet the requirements of the European Union's Directive on the restriction of the use of certain substances (RoHS).
