Austriamicrosystems Announces High-Efficiency 3A Step-Down Converter

The AS1328 DC-DC step-down converter features efficiency up to 96% with tiny footprint

Unterpremstaetten, Austria - austriamicrosystems (SIX: AMS), a leading global designer and manufacturer of high-performance analog ICs, has announced the AS1328 high-efficiency 1.5 MHz synchronous DC-DC step-down converter. This buck regulator features efficiencies up to 96%, excellent light load efficiencies and with a quiescent current of only 25 µA.

The AS1328 DC-DC can deliver up to 3A of output current at output voltages as low as 0.6 V while operating from an input voltage of 2.7 to 5.5 V over a -40°C to 85°C temperature range. Fixed-output voltage versions are available in 50 mV increments or, alternatively, the output voltage can be set from 0.6 V to the input voltage via an external resistor divider. In addition, the AS1328 buck converter incorporates a Softstart feature that minimizes the initial inrush current and is available with a "power okay" function or "low battery" detection signal.

Valuable board space is conserved by incorporating internal compensation components as well as two switches with RDSon of only 35 mOhm. Housed in a tiny 3 x 3 mm TQFN package, the AS1328 buck regulator features a high fixed switching frequency of 1.5 MHz, allowing the use of small surface mount inductors.

"End users are demanding more and more features in portable devices, with longer battery life and smaller package sizes", noted Terry Lavell, austriamicrosystems' Marketing Manager for Consumer & Communications. "It is important that the switching converter can provide high peak currents while still providing excellent quiescent current and good efficiencies at light loads. austriamicrosystems' AS1328 buck converter addresses these key needs by allowing engineers to design a power supply in a small footprint with an excellent flat efficiency response from 1mA to 1A, plus a high 3A peak current capability."

The input voltage range of the AS1328 DC-DC step-down converter makes it well suited for applications powered by a single Li-Ion battery, while its small footprint enables the AS1328 to be used in portable devices such as medical instruments, mobile internet devices and tablet PCs. Applications requiring high currents are also targets for the AS1328, including solid state drives, set top boxes, base stations, telecom and network equipment, FPGA, DDR, and ìP cores supplies.

Price and availability
The AS1328 high-efficiency 3A step-down converter is available now and is priced at $1.30 in 1000 piece quantities.
