GE's New IP-Server Simplifies Substation Data Communication

ATLANTA, GA.- October 22, 2002 - GE Power Systems has simplified substation automation with the introduction of its state-of-the-art IP-Server network communication server. The server provides power utilities and other large power users with easy, low-cost, enterprise-wide access to substation information using a standard Web browser without any additional software.

The flexible IP-Server with a built-in human-machine interface (HMI) polls, concentrates and manages data from intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), simultaneously supporting up to 20 enterprise users, such as operations, engineering and maintenance, using a dial-up or high-speed connection. The substation hardened stand-alone server is easily configured using a Web browser and requires minimal time for system integration. A simple TELNET session enables users to communicate using the IED's native software to retrieve data such as fault records, events and relay settings.

The server supports a variety of IEDs from GE and other manufacturers such as ABB, SEL, Beckwith, and Basler, and also provides SCADA interfaces via a variety of protocols including DNP3.0, IEC®-870-5-101, Telegyr®, Modbus® RTU, Modbus TCP/IP, and ABB®-INCOM. Up to 16 communications ports are provided via plug-in modules configurable with either RS-232, RS-485 or fiber optic.

The IP-Server's open architecture enables software customization using off-the-shelf tools such as JAVA® and HTML, and technology upgrades are accomplished using simple, online FTP file transfers.
