Card Edge Connectors enable SHB Express(TM) backplane designs.

November 28, 2005 - Vertical PCI Express(TM) Card-Edge Connectors support backplane designs based on System Host Board Express(TM) PCIe Specification. Connectors at interface between SHB and backplane are defined as x8 and x16 PCIe connectors. Backplane slots that interface with PCI Express peripherals can be supported with x1, x4, x8, or x16 PCIe connector links. Each serial PCIe lane is comprised of differential transmit and receive signal pairs that support 2.5 Gb/s data rate in each direction.

FCI Card-Edge Connectors Enable SHB Express(TM) Backplane Designs

ETTERS, Pa. (October 27, 2005) - FCI, a leading supplier of connectors and interconnect systems, has developed a broad range of vertical PCI Express(TM) (PCIe(TM)) card-edge connectors to support manufacturers' backplane designs based on the "SHB Express(TM) System Host Board PCI Express Specification" recently adopted by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG®) as its PICMG 1.3 specification document. The connectors at the interface between the System Host Board (SHB) and backplane are defined as x8 and x16 PCIe connectors. The backplane slots that are designed to interface with PCI Express peripherals can be supported with x1, x4, x8 or x16 PCIe connector links.

"FCI can supply the complete range of PCI Express connector sizes with either through-hole solder-to-board or press-fit termination options," said David Sideck, FCI regional market manager. "Equipment manufacturers may find press-fit termination to offer processing advantages when backplane thicknesses exceed 2.36mm (0.093")."

Solder and press-fit connectors are available in standard x1, x4, x8, or x16 link widths. Each serial PCI Express lane is comprised of differential transmit and receive signal pairs that support 2.5 Gb/s data rate in each direction. All connectors fully support SHB Express or PCI Express signal and power requirements, as well as the auxiliary signals at the interface between the system board and add-in card.
RoHS-compliant connector versions compatible with lead-free soldering temperatures are also available.

Prices for the card-edge connectors are dependent upon connector configuration but are typically less than $0.01 per contact for 2,000 piece order quantities. Samples are available for delivery, with production lead times from stock to six weeks.
