New Component Drive, the ACS50, Packs Performance and Ease into Extremely Compact Package

(With small-horsepower motor-control technology made simple via this introduction, ABB drives offer extremely precise control and replacement for contactors, soft starters, n-speed motors, triacs and step transformers in a host of applications)

NEW BERLIN, Wis., July 7, 2004...ABB is addressing new low-cost drive applications with an aggressive, two-pronged strategy. Firstly, the company is launching a micro drive rated from .25 to 1 horsepower - calling it a "component drive."

Secondly, the technology featured in the drive, miniaturization and component integration, combined with the company's engineering expertise, provides a platform that allows "ABB to target applications not typically operated with an AC drive," according to Jukka Nurmi, ABB Inc., Low-Voltage Drives, product line manager for the new ACS50.

Precise Control in Unexpected Applications --
The ABB component drive is aimed at applications such as fans, pumps, packaging machines and conveyors. The drive is "an ideal substitute for existing technologies, such as contactors, soft starters, n-speed motors, triacs and step transformers," Nurmi said.

And, via a combination of the product's core platform and company's engineering expertise, ABB now is in a position to tailor drives for home appliances, including washing machines and refrigerators.

The ABB component drive will be sold through ABB's existing, and new, channel partners. The drive platform, technology and know-how are aimed at high-volume Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), according to Nurmi. "Such users demand low-cost, high-quality, tailored solutions for their products," he noted.

Gateway Into New Markets --
The ABB component drive product is even expected to open up new markets to ABB, including unusual applications as diverse as automated gate control, medical scanners and pizza ovens. Likely purchasers serving these markets will be small-to-medium-size OEMs, "and we expect that they will account for 90 per cent of sales," Nurmi said. These users demand a compact and simple, non-technical product that operates an AC motor with virtually no noise, has low EMC emissions, has low cost and is available immediately.

Easy Interface --
Users interface with the component drive via three control potentiometers and eight DIP switches, located on the front panel. The control potentiometers are adjusted easily, and require only a small screwdriver to adjust control of the motor thermal protection, acceleration/deceleration time, and the maximum frequency. The acceleration/deceleration control potentiometer, for example, allows the user to vary the acceleration/deceleration time between 0.1 and 30 seconds.

The DIP switches enable the user to set, for example, the noise control to either standard or silent, while the drive's auto reset can be either on or off. There is no control panel needed. For the user, this means faster set up and easier configuration.

The drive can be either DIN-rail or wall mounted and comes in two frame sizes. The smaller model is less than two inches wide, 5.75 inches high, and 5 inches deep; the larger version is slightly over 2.5 inches wide, with the other dimensions the same. An innovative mounting clip also can be fitted to the side of the drive, so it can be attached with the cooling fins against, or away from, the wall. The drives are available either for 100 to 120VAC or 200 to 240 VAC single-phase systems. They are suitable for 230V three-phase motors with power ratings from .25 to 1 HP
