Overvoltage Protection IC optimizes available PCB space.

January 14, 2009 - Supplied in 3.0 x 4.0 x 0.9 mm package, NUS6189 integrates performance and functions of overvoltage protection (OVP) circuit, 30 V P-channel power MOSFET, low VCE(sat) transistor, and low Rds(on) power MOSFET to protect sensitive electronic circuitry in portable devices from overvoltage transients and power supply faults. Overvoltage turn-off time of less than 1.0 µsec ensures quick disconnects of input supply from load during faults, and design delivers minimal power dissipation.

ON Semiconductor's New Highly-Integrated Overvoltage Protection IC Reduces Board Space in Portable Devices by up to 40 Percent

The NUS6189 offers a low profile and small footprint along with a new level of integrated functions, safety features and power efficiency

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Nov. 19, 2008 - ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), a leading global supplier of high performance, energy efficient, silicon solutions, has introduced the NUS6189 , a device that integrates the performance and functions of an overvoltage protection (OVP) circuit, a 30 volt (V) P-channel power MOSFET, a low VCE(sat) transistor and a low Rds(on) power MOSFET into a space-saving 3.0 mm x 4.0 mm x 0.9 mm package. The NUS6189 is designed to protect sensitive electronic circuitry from overvoltage transients and power supply faults. It is optimized for applications that utilize an external AC-DC adapter or car accessory charger such as mobile phones, PMPs and mobile internet devices

By integrating the four separate device functions commonly needed for protection within portable devices into a single IC, the NUS6189 reduces the PCB space required by up to 40 percent. In addition, the device's integrated design delivers very low power dissipation, significantly reducing heat and improving battery life. Specifically designed to handle large inrush peak currents, the NUS6189 is the ideal complement to power management ICs offered by ON Semiconductor and to the leading CDMA chipsets - both being designed into next generation portable devices. With an overvoltage turn-off time of less than 1.0 micro seconds (µs) the device quickly disconnects the input supply from the load during faults, thus assuring superior protection over existing slower solutions

"ON Semiconductor continues to lead the industry in delivering innovative, highly efficient solutions in smaller, lower profile packages that not only meet the size requirements for next generation applications, but that deliver the performance demanded by customers," said Manor Narayanan, vice president and general manager of ON Semiconductor's Digital Consumer Products Division. "We work closely with our customers to understand their needs and we plan to continue to develop targeted solutions to help them keep their competitive edge."

The NUS6189 is a key addition to the portfolio of ON Semiconductor products targeted at the four primary subsystems typically found in portable applications. This device specifically addresses the challenging requirements within the Interconnect subsystem. ON Semiconductor also offers solutions for the Display and Lighting, the Power Management and the Audio/Video subsystems for handheld portable devices.

Packaging and Pricing
The NUS6189 is available in a low profile 3.0 mm x 4.0 mm x 0.9 mm QFN-22, lead-free package. It is budgetary priced at $0.55 USD per unit in 1,000 unit quantities.
