LSI Announces Codec Portfolio for High-Performance StarPro Media Processor Family

Enables next-generation high-density, low-power media gateways

MILPITAS, Calif., Nov. 19 -- LSI Corporation (NYSE:LSI) today announced a broad portfolio of voice, audio and video codecs. Codecs are software programs that enable coding and decoding of real-time multimedia communications. Optimized to run on the LSI(TM) StarPro(TM) family of media processors, this combination of codecs and processors provide the high-density, low-power transcoding demanded by next-generation wireless, wireline and enterprise applications. The portfolio also supports video and audio codecs for emerging Web and business applications that require MPEG-4, H.264, H.263, Microsoft RT audio, iLBC, iSAC and AAC-LC/LD.

"The market is demanding higher-performance, multimedia codecs that use less network bandwidth and consume less power," said Will Strauss, principal analyst with Forward Concepts. "With the addition of these new codecs to the StarPro media processor, LSI has reset the bar for high-density, universal media gateways."

Codecs are installed in intelligent network devices and are so ubiquitous that their compression performance and power per channel are gating factors to the mass deployment of communications services. The codec portfolio enables manufacturers to build more cost-effective, high-density platforms that support advanced video and voice services in a wide range of network environments. OEMs can select from more than twenty multimedia codecs that are optimized for the StarPro architecture.

Charlie Kawwas, vice president of marketing, Networking Components Group, LSI, said, "As the market continues to migrate to higher quality and more robust multimedia codecs, the performance and power efficiency of the StarPro media processors become increasingly critical to building cost-effective, high-density media gateways for wireless, wireline, broadband and enterprise applications."

The StarPro SP2600 family of media processors is scalable from 1 to 12 DSP cores per chip, providing a single platform for a wide range of applications from entry-level, multi-service business gateways through wireless carrier-class media gateways. The new codec portfolio is available now exclusively for the LSI StarPro SP2600 product line.
