CREDANT Technologies Raises the Bar on Securing Data Stored on Highly Portable, Easily Lost iPods, USB Flash Drives, and Other Devices

CREDANT Mobile Guardian External Media Shield extends central management and on-device encryption to reduce risk by protecting enterprise data as it travels with the end user

DALLAS, Aug. 6 / / -- CREDANT Technologies, the market leader in mobile data protection solutions, today raised the bar on securing data stored on small, portable external storage devices with the launch of CREDANT(R) Mobile Guardian (CMG) version 5.3 and the CMG External Media Shield (EMS). This release of CMG goes further than any other offering on the market in centrally managing and securing or restricting the use of external storage devices including widely used iPods, USB flash and external hard drives, and smart phone SD/CF cards. These devices are typically personally owned, can store large volumes of business and personally identifying data, and are easily lost or stolen. Even more alarming is that their disappearance is typically not reported. Left unsecured, these devices are highly vulnerable to data leakage that would require public notification of the breach.

The CREDANT Mobile Guardian for external media (CMG EMS) is for organizations that need data portability; are concerned about data leakage; damage to their brand, and need to reduce risk. CREDANT surveyed 323 IT managers and executives, as well as workers in Silicon Valley, and developed this version of CREDANT Mobile Guardian to address their concerns about potential data leaks when these highly portable storage devices are lost or stolen.

CMG EMS is a software client that runs on diverse types of external storage devices and is centrally managed by CREDANT's flagship product, CREDANT Mobile Guardian Enterprise Edition. With CMG EMS installed on their external storage devices, end users can easily read and write data to these devices and rest assured that a password will always be required to access the data and that all specified data is encrypted to meet compliance requirements. Of note to iPod/MP3 users: CMG EMS allows automatic and transparent encryption by file type, so music and video files are not impacted.

Furthermore, CMG EMS's flexible access options enable the user to plug the secured device into any computer and work on existing documents or add new documents. For the employee that takes work home at night, or carries a presentation to a conference or client site stored on one of these devices, CMG EMS provides the security necessary to protect against a data breach and the resulting notification costs, legal liability, and brand damage if the device is lost or stolen.

"With millions of these devices in use throughout organizations today, our mission is to help educate the market that data breach notification regulations apply to any lost or stolen device containing personally identifying data, not just laptops and backup tapes," stated Bob Heard, founder and CEO of CREDANT Technologies. "Our goal is to use continued product innovation to stay ahead of emerging threats to data while ensuring organizations can reduce risk by cost-effectively controlling and securing all mobile endpoints."

Competitive offerings provide encryption for external storage devices as a separate product or built into the storage device, and often leave key management and data recovery to the end user. In contrast, CMG EMS is fully integrated with CREDANT Mobile Guardian Enterprise Edition and closes a serious compliance gap by providing the centralized management functions necessary to enforce consistent security across all mobile endpoints while ensuring data recovery and compliance reporting.

"We currently use CREDANT Mobile Guardian to protect our laptops and desktops against data breaches and are excited about the opportunity to cost-effectively secure and control other endpoints with CREDANT," said Kirk Halliday, manager of Grant Thornton's Enterprise Systems Administration Group. "Protecting data inside the enterprise and on laptops is a given, and now we will have the ability to easily extend security to all devices that can store sensitive or personal information."

CMG EMS is cost-effective to manage and deploy:

o Integration with CREDANT Mobile Guardian Enterprise Edition delivers
seamless support for all mobile endpoints from a single management
console.
o Centralized management makes it cost-effective for any organization to
secure and control low-cost external storage devices to meet existing
and new regulations.
o Flexible use options help control data leakage by restricting access to
the external media from CMG shielded computers only or allowing their
use at other non-company locations, such as a home PC.

CMG EMS meets compliance regulations for external storage:

o User-transparent encryption ensures all data is protected with
industry-standard strong encryption to reduce risk.
o Encrypted data is always password-protected to ensure only the
authorized user has access.
o Policy-based intelligent encryption, centralized audit, and compliance
reporting of all mobile endpoints eliminate the need to notify
customers if the device is lost or stolen.

CMG EMS balances security and usability:

o Client and clientless options ensure that mobile workers can travel
with data stored on an external storage device, work from a home
computer or at a client site, and have everything they need to
read/write encrypted data to CMG EMS whether or not they have
administration privileges on that computer.
o Automatic and transparent encryption file-type controls ensure that
personal files such as audio and video files are not impacted.
Encryption policies can require all data to be encrypted or allow
encrypted and non-encrypted data to coexist -- a critical option given
the increasing number of devices containing a combination of audio,
video and data files.
o Users can seamlessly drag and drop their working files to external
storage devices for maximum portability and know that the files are
protected.
o Help desk support for data recovery ensures data is always available.
o Fail-safe options allow increasing cool-down periods between access
attempts or automatically delete encryption keys based on a specified
access attempt policy, protecting the privacy of sensitive information,
even if the media is lost or stolen.
