LSI Introduces Multi-Format, High Definition Transcoding Media Processor Architecture for Next-Generation Digital Video Applications

Domino[X](TM) multi-stream architecture supports HD H.264, VC-1, and MPEG-2 digital video for Blu-ray/HD-DVD, STB and professional markets

MILPITAS, Calif., Oct. 9 -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE:LSI), the pioneer in media processing technology, today introduced the Domino[X](TM) architecture, a multi-stream, multi-format, high-definition media processor architecture. Focused on providing an ideal balance of quality, performance and flexibility, the Domino[X] architecture cost- effectively enables next-generation digital media applications. Details on the new architecture will be discussed on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at the InStat Microprocessor Forum in San Jose. Also available is a multimedia presentation of the architecture and related podcasts.

According to Arizona-based analyst firm, InStat, digital media products, such as advanced DVD recorders, high-definition set-top boxes, Blu-ray/HD-DVD players and recorders, integrated digital TVs, and professional content creation and broadcast infrastructure devices are expected to reach $36 billion in 2010.

"Next-generation applications offer new opportunities in both the professional and consumer electronics markets, particularly for companies like LSI, which is well-versed in media processing and servicing these markets," said Michelle Abraham, senior analyst, InStat. "These are significant opportunities for manufacturers as well, but the technology and market complexities require sophisticated silicon solutions based on architectures such as the Domino[X] platform."

With the electronics industries undergoing dramatic transitions from analog to digital, from standard-definition to high-definition video, and from MPEG-2 to H.264/VC-1, end product development is becoming increasingly complex. Manufacturers of consumer electronics and professional products require a flexible and scalable media processor solution that bridges different formats and promotes interoperability between diverse electronics products.

Addressing these challenges, the LSI Domino[X] is a multi-core media processor architecture that is flexible and scalable enough to address high- performance professional codec solutions, as well as cost-sensitive consumer electronics products. One of the key benefits of the Domino[X] architecture is multi-format encoding, decoding and transcoding of digital video, enabling content to be converted and reformatted for viewing on a wide range of products -- from mobile to HDTV. The Domino[X] architecture processes multiple streams of digital video, including:

-- Dual HD decode
-- Dual SD encode + SD decode
-- HD encode + SD decode
-- HD to HD transcode

Transcoding between H.264 HD and MPEG-2 HD is particularly important to bridge legacy and next-generation digital video equipment.

"The Domino[X] architecture builds on over a decade of proven LSI media processing technology and products, which enables us to deliver highly integrated solutions and unique capabilities to our customers," said Tim Vehling, vice president of marketing, Consumer Products Group, LSI Logic. "We architected the Domino[X] platform to enable high-quality solutions that ideally balance cost and performance for a variety of applications designed for the expanding digital world."

Features and benefits of the Domino[X] architecture include:
-- Hybrid software and hardware approach that enables product and feature flexibility;
-- Robust software that reduces product development risk and system-level costs
-- Encoding, decoding and transcoding of DV, MPEG-1/2/4, H.264 and VC-1 video compression standards and associated audio standards, for interoperability and backward compatibility between products;
-- Transcrypting (content security) to enable content sharing while maintaining content owner rights; and
-- Patented DVFX(TM) technologies for high-quality video.

The Domino[X] architecture is based on many years of experience in providing professional-grade, Emmy-award winning video compression technology. Products based on the previous-generation DoMiNo(R) architecture will be complementary to the new Domino[X] family of products. DoMiNo solutions have been utilized by NASA to broadcast HD-quality images from space, have enabled the broadcast infrastructure market, and continue to be deployed in set-top boxes from Motorola, as well as a wide range of DVD recorder products from leading consumer electronics companies such as LG Electronics, Panasonic, and Philips.
