Original Press Release:

Advantech's SOM-4455 SOM-ETX CPU Module Provides Superb Power Performance

Irvine, CA, April 27, 2006 - Advantech launches the newest SOM-ETX member in the series-SOM-4455. The new SOM-ETX compliant CPU module is equipped with the AMD Geode(TM) LX processor and the AMD Geode(TM) CS5536 companion device to provide the perfect balance of computing performance with low power consumption. SOM-4455 uses the same mechanical design and layout as its predecessor providing an ideal upgrade path for AMD Geode GX1 processor-based systems. Customers' own application-specific carrier board allows embedded integrators to focus on their applications saving up to 80 percent of overall design and development effort. SOM-4455 performs better but is still as economical as its predecessor.

The latest RoHS compliant AMD Geode(TM) LX processor delivers 30 - 50 percent higher performance with equal or lower power consumption as the previous AMD Geode(TM) GX1 processor, making the AMD Geode LX processor perfect for smaller SOM-ETX form factors. SOM-4455's fanless low thermal design benefits from the processors .13µ architecture that delivers the best performance per watt in the 32-bit embedded industry. The AMD Geode(TM) LX processor supports DDR memory up to 256MB and 64 bit onboard graphics. The SOM-ETX line has great I/O capacity and SOM-4455 is no exception with four USB 2.0 ports, 10-100Base-T Ethernet, and LVDS/LCD/AC'97 interfaces, and of course with SOM-ETX PCI and ISA are fully supported. A flexible and vibration resistant CompactFlash card for installing Windows XP/XPe and Windows CE 5.0 embedded OS is supported by Advantech to provide custom OS image development saving customers time and effort.

"The AMD Geode(TM) LX processor offers outstanding performance per watt, providing x86 power and versatility to a variety of applications, including measurement and non-critical medical markets," said Erik Salo, director of marketing for AMD's Embedded Computing Solutions Division. "Together with Advantech, our efforts will help customers speed the next generation of embedded devices to market at a lower total cost of ownership."

SOM-4455 is positioned to provide a perfect replacement for previous SOM-ETX CPU modules based on AMD Geode(TM) GX1 processors, offering higher performance at equal or lower power consumption as the SOM-ETX board that is compliant with the European Unions RoHS directives for more environmental friendly manufacturing and recycling industrial processes.

SOM-4455 is ideal for Medical and Test-measurement markets, providing a highly modular and scalable solution that lowers design and development costs reducing overall total cost of ownership and speeding time to market delivery. SOM-4455 SOM-ETX CPU module board is available now; please contact your local sales for information.
