World Market Leader for Anatomical Teaching Aids Relies on Siemens Software NX

Hamburg, Germany. Hamburg-based consortium 3B Scientific, the leading manufacturer of anatomic teaching aids for science, training and patient information worldwide, has chosen NX, the 3D-CAx solution from Siemens PLM Software, for its interactive simulator development project.

3B specializes in training products in the fields of medicine and the natural sciences, physiotherapy and acupuncture. With the development of interactive simulators, the company, whose core business until now was in the field of anatomy and thus in cold rotation, warm rotation and hand casting areas of manufacture, has now chosen NX, the 3D-CAx solution by Siemens PLM Software. With the introduction of NX, the areas of traditional and modern manufacture at 3B Scientific will merge, with the traditional field of anatomy becoming increasingly digitalized and converted into 3D data. This data will then form the basis for new products.

The patented high-tech birth simulator, 3B SIMone, is the first multimodal simulator with a haptic, visual and acoustic interface and is uniquely realistic in its field. During this innovative project employees were faced with a series of challenges: the team was able to turn to in-house expertise in the fields of plastics and electronics, but had, until that point, little experience in the areas of mechanics and sensor technology. The decisive motivation for 3B Scientific's investment in NX was that it provided a high degree of flexibility in development terms combined with a high rate of change as a history- based 3D solution. It also ensured the fast, unproblematic processing of large amounts of data and extremely simple handling of external data. The Siemens PLM Software "Solution Partner'' ConmatiX Engineering has supported 3B in the implementation of NX and in the training of users. Interactive software, sensor technology and enhanced mechanical movement are areas of innovation which have emerged from the field of anatomy.

The tools used have been created in NX for the first time. In the case of simulators, it is of secondary importance for the model to correspond exactly to the original; what is more important is for function and technology to fit. Top-quality production step-files facilitate manufacture and ensure first-class tools and products.

The 3B Scientific group currently has around 600 employees in over 100 countries. The company was set up in Hamburg in 1948 when its founder started recycling plastic to build skeletons.
