Second annual event to feature Joe Justice as host of the eXtreme Manufacturing car build workshop

BIG M Logo(DEARBORN, Mich.,) — SME is pleased to announce the return of its successful manufacturing event, THE BIG M. This annual conference and expo returns to Detroit, June 2-4, 2015, at Cobo Center. The lineup of features and conference sessions will continue to focus on the emerging technologies, processes and advanced solutions that are shaping the future of manufacturing.

THE BIG M is an opportunity for manufacturers from across the country and the Great Lakes region to network and experience the technologies that are transforming manufacturing, all under one roof.

“THE BIG M is a premier forum to showcase how manufacturing is being reinvented,” said Christine Longroy, event manager of THE BIG M. “Here, manufacturers will demonstrate and review the latest advances in technology and find the solutions that will enable them to manufacture for the future.”

M | Build Workshop

Joe Justice, creator of eXtreme Manufacturing, will host a special feature of THE BIG M: the M | Build Workshop. Over the course of four, 60-minute “sprints,” participants will self-organize into cross-functional teams and assemble a car within one day. The exercise will introduce participants to Scrum, a manufacturing method designed to add energy, focus, clarity and transparency to project planning and implementation.

"You'll learn about and gets hands-on with the benchmarked, fastest tools and processes for new product development and manufacturing,” said Justice. “Attend THE BIG M agile car build and blow away your market with un-impeded new product development and manufacturing, in small and large volumes."

There are four sprints as part of the car build including, Chassis Time, Wheels Up, Full Steer Ahead and Hot Rod – the final sprint that pulls the car completely together.

“Not only will participants of the workshop help build a car on-site, but they will gain the experience of being part of a high-performing agile team,” said Longroy. “This build is just one of many interactive programs at THE BIG M that will allow attendees to experience innovation and the latest technology hands-on, in real time.”

THE BIG M, By the Numbers

In 2014, THE BIG M convened 14 co-located events and had 6,269 total attendees at Cobo Center. More than 2,500 participated in THE BIG M to explore leading emerging manufacturing technologies — including advanced materials, rapid/additive manufacturing, automated manufacturing, research and development, and tooling — as well as Detroit’s role in manufacturing’s renaissance throughout the country.
