Siemens Gas Turbines to Supply More Power to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania

Siemens Energy has received an order for the supply of three industrial gas turbines to Tanzania.

Siemens' customer is the Norwegian company Jacobsen Elektro, which will build a power plant for the state-owned energy provider Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO). The three SGT-800 gas turbines will be supplied to the Ubungo power plant located in Dar Es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania.

For the Ubungo power plant, Siemens will supply three SGT-800 industrial gas turbines with a combined capacity of 100 megawatts at site condition. Connection to the grid is planned for late 2011. The natural gas for the power plant is supplied through a pipeline from the Songo Songo gas field off the coast of Tanzania. "With our gas turbines we can support the development of a reliable power supply in Tanzania,"said Markus Tacke, CEO of the Industrial Power Business Unit of Siemens Energy. In Tanzania, less than 10 percent of the population of 40 million has access to the national power grid. The country depends mainly on hydro power, with only a few gas-fired power stations in place. "Our SGT-800 is one of the most efficient industrial gas turbines on the market today. All emission requirements are below international standards and Siemens can thus provide environmentally friendly fossil-fueled power generation to Dar Es Salaam," added Tacke.

In July last year, Siemens announced the strengthening of its sales activities in Africa. Providing adequate supplies of electricity is one of the continent's greatest challenges. Siemens' power generation, transmission and distribution solution businesses are ready to meet this challenge.

The Siemens Energy Sector is the world's leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power and for the extraction, conversion and transport of oil and gas. In fiscal 2010 (ended September 30), the Energy Sector had revenues of approximately EUR25.5 billion and received new orders totaling more than EUR30.1 billion and posted a profit of more than EUR3.3 billion. On September 30, 2010, the Energy Sector had a work force of more than 88,000. Further information is available at: http://www.siemens.com/energy.
