Severn Trent Services to Present Paper on MicroDynamics® Microwave UV Disinfection Technology at WEFTEC 2012

Paper to highlight performance of the company’s microwave UV disinfection systems at three

wastewater treatment facilities.

FT. WASHINGTON, Pa.

Severn Trent Services, a leading global supplier of water and wastewater solutions, will be presenting a paper at WEFTEC’s Exhibitor Showcase highlighting three successful MicroDynamics® open channel microwave UV disinfection system installations. The paper, titled

“Three Wastewater Facilities and Their Operational Experiences with Microwave Powered UV Disinfection,” will be presented on 3 October 2012 at 2:45 p.m. CDT in Exhibit Hall Meeting Room C in the New Orleans Morial Convention Center by Stanley Shmia, Severn Trent

Services UV product manager.

Kent County (Delaware) Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility, Leacock (Pennsylvania) Wastewater Treatment Plant and Mandeville (Louisiana) Wastewater Treatment Plant all required new UV systems and chose the MicroDynamics technology based on financial, health,

safety and / or regulatory requirements. Shmia will review the design, commissioning and operation experiences of the three facilities.

“MicroDynamics represents a significant advancement in UV lamp technology. The system is a proven, cost-effective, reliable and safe UV disinfection treatment method,” said Shmia. “Costly lamp maintenance and replacement is now a thing of the past.”

Traditional UV lamps rely on an electrode to ignite gas in a quartz tube. The electrode is often the main failure point of traditional lamps, requiring regular and costly replacement. Microwave powered UV lamps energize low-pressure, high-output electrodeless lamps and remove the major failure mechanism found in traditional UV lamp technology. Microwave powered UV lamps do not require electrodes; instead, they are powered by microwaves which excite the mercury-argon gas mix in the lamp to produce UV light. MicroDynamics systems are available in

open channel designs for the UV disinfection of wastewater or closed vessel designs for both wastewater and drinking water treatment.

Severn Trent Services will also be introducing the next generation of MicroDynamics open channel microwave UV disinfection systems at WEFTEC 2012. Specially designed for wastewater treatment and water reuse applications, this new solution offers greater disinfection

capacity in a smaller footprint compared to previous designs.
