Severn Trent Services Awarded Contract for Tertiary Treatment Technologies at Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades in North East England

TETRA® NSAF and TETRA®DeepBed(TM)filtration technologies have been proven effective in hundreds of installations throughout the world.

BIRMINGHAM, U.K. - Severn Trent Services has been awarded a contract to provide its TETRA®NSAF(nitrifying submerged aerated filter) and TETRA®DeepBed(TM)filtration technologies for upgrades to Northumbrian Water's Consett sewage treatment works near Ebchester in the north east of England. The filtration systems are being employed to accommodate a growing population served by the plant, which currently treats ten million litres of wastewater daily for customers in several surrounding communities. The contract, which includes system design, manufacture and installation, was awarded by the project's general contractor, Carillion plc. Entec Holdings Ltd. is the project consultant. Work on the project commenced in early July 2010, with completion expected in summer 2011.

Over the past ten years, the TETRA NSAF technology has been proven to effectively remove ammonia and BOD in installations throughout the world including more than 50 wastewater plants across Europe. The NSAF is an upflow, fixed-film biological reactor that generates minimal solids requiring handling and disposal following treatment. The technology is extremely flexible and is available in a range of sizes - from small modular units suitable for above or below ground construction to custom-made configurations for large plants.

TETRA DeepBed filters provide excellent total phosphorous removal to meet stringent limits below 0.2 mg/l. Thesystem is a downflow sand filter with a high loading capacity, making it ideal for handling peak loads.

The Consett sewage treatment works has five NSAF cells and four DeepBed filter cells. The new NSAF and deep bed filters cover 300m2. The average flow is 14,342 m3/hr and the plant is designed to achieve a final effluent consent of 15 mg/l BOD, 20 mg/l TSS and 5 mg/l ammonia.

According to Dean Thompson, Northumbrian Water's project manager for the upgrade, "The catchment area served by Consett sewage treatment works has experienced significant new development in recent years, and the upgrade will provide additional treatment capacity to ensure we can accommodate this growth."
