People on the Move spotlights trailblazers in standardization, highlighting their latest achievements, advancements, and contributions to the standards community. The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), an organizational member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has announced the promotion of J. Scott Peterson to the position of senior vice president for communications. NEI is a policy organization for the nuclear energy and technologies industry whose mission is to ensure the formation of policies that promote the beneficial uses of nuclear energy and technologies in the U.S. and around the world. As part of the executive leadership team, Mr. Peterson will direct all NEI communications programs, including media relations, branding and advertising, editorial and creative services, public opinion research, and industry communications. He will also manage the development of the Clean and Safe Energy Coalition and other national and state-based outreach initiatives in support of the nuclear energy industry. Mr. Peterson first joined NEI as senior director for external communications, and was promoted to vice president of communications in 2001. He led major branding programs to promote the benefits of nuclear energy and directed public affairs programs that support enactment of federal legislation, including the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Before joining NEI, Mr. Peterson was director of communications for the American Nuclear Energy Council, one of three organizations merged in 1994 to form NEI. He also served as a senior media relations representative at Illinois Power and was a reporter and columnist at newspapers in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Mr. Peterson received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has completed the Reactor Technology Program for Utility Executives at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
