PDMA's Visions Magazine Announces "Best of Visions" 2008 Award Winner

Article a Blueprint for Using Online Communities as Tools for Innovation and New Product Development

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., October 30, 2009- How the Web--and online communities--are transforming the landscape of innovation and new product development (NPD) was the topic of an article that was awarded the "Best of Visions" award for 2008, it was announced today by the Product Development & Management Association (PDMA). The award will be presented November 4th at the 33rd Annual International Conference of the association in Anaheim, California.

Written by Claire-Juliette Beale, the article provided a blueprint for companies determined to innovate in the most cost-effective and creative way possible. Beale is the founder and chief consultant of Innovate2market, a company based in Durham, North Carolina. A copy of the article, "How Online Communities Are Changing the NPD Landscape-An Introduction to the Value of this New Tool-part one," may be found at www.visions-digital.com/visions/200812/?noli=1& (December 2008 issue, p.14).

"Beale's article was right on target: clear, articulate, and comprehensive," noted Visions Editor-in-Chief, April Klimley. "It is hard to find this information consolidated anywhere. It fits perfectly with our magazine's mission to fulfill a special need in the new product development (NPD) world: Getting the word out fast-and clearly-on new knowledge, opinions, and case histories."

"I'm honored to receive this recognition from such an influential magazine. I have heard time and time again from fellow professionals worldwide how much they value Visions," commented Beale. "New technologies play a key role in innovation and NPD. In addition to improving company performance in those areas, they can also alter the playing field.

This is particularly true of online communities: While they may be used as a tactical tool to support product development and marketing objectives, they can ultimately transform an organization's NPD process, and the organization itself. The challenge is to get past the hype to determine what works for our goals and our organizations."

Beale's in-depth piece was selected from an array of articles contributed by NPD experts and published by Visions in 2008. Judges for the award were former PDMA presidents Paul Belliveau, Principal, Paul Belliveau Associates; Bob Brentin, Commercialization Coordinator, Central Michigan University; and Chris Miller, Founder and CEO, Innovation Focus. The latter praised Beale's work as "a unique contribution to the PDMA body of knowledge, and one that is immediately applicable to practitioners."
