OpVista and Force10 Networks to Demonstrate Advanced GbE Distribution and Delivery for Operators at NXTcomm

OpVista's New 'EtherWave' Solution and the Force10 S25P High Performance GbE/10 GbE Access Switch Showcase How to Lower the Cost of GbE Distribution and Delivery

CHICAGO, June 18 - OpVista and Force10 Networks® today announced that the companies will conduct a network simulation at NXTcomm in Chicago (in OpVista's booth, 7415) demonstrating how carriers can cost-effectively distribute GbE services to the network edge while minimizing CAPEX and OPEX costs.

OpVista provides optical transport systems that deliver scalable and reconfigurable dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) for leading organizations in the cable and telecommunications industries. The Force10 portfolio of reliable switches and routers delivers the reliability, scalability and control that network operators require to build flexible, application-ready networks.

Carriers today are straining under the tremendous growth of GbE-based video and data services, particularly when it comes to the "bandwidth bottleneck" at the edge of the network. Therefore, OpVista and Force10 have teamed up to demonstrate how operators can leverage OpVista's new EtherWave solution and Force 10's S25P 10 GbE Access Switch to deliver GbE based services to the edge and lower their "CAPEX" and "OPEX" costs. EtherWave consists of the OpVista2000 TR110 GbE "muxponder", incorporating Layer 2 functionality, and the TR71 10GbE transponder.

The demonstration incorporates two separate video sources feeding video streams over GbE. The Force10 S25P access switch aggregates the packets coming from both ports into a single 10GbE stream and hands it off to an OpVista2000 TR71 card at Node A. The 10GbE is carried over a 10G wavelength to the OpVista2000 at Node B. The OpVista TR110 card disaggregates the 10GbE signal into the individual GbE streams via the Layer 2 switch within the TR110.

"This demonstration of EtherWave showcases OpVista's leadership in infrastructure re-use to achieve CAPEX and OPEX reduction," said Dawn Hogh, VP of Marketing and Business Development for OpVista. "Working with Force10, we can achieve a highly effective means for Layer 2 aggregation and transport and more efficient point-to-point bi-directional transport service and traffic grooming. The interoperability between Force10's S25P and OpVista's EtherWave goes to the heart of our value proposition for carriers - leveraging existing infrastructure to deliver next generation services with minimal CAPEX and OPEX."

About OpVista

The OpVista nWave Optical Networking platform turns existing network infrastructure into carrier Ethernet-ready networks easily and cost-effectively. Universally compatible with existing metro and regional DWDM systems and fiber plant, the nWave product family can quadruple the number of available wavelengths in order to meet exploding consumer and business demand for high-bandwidth video, such as HDTV, and IP-based services. Furthermore, using OpVista's unique optical multicasting solution, carriers can deliver bandwidth in single wavelength increments to any node at any time. As carriers make the transition to IP and Ethernet-based services, OpVista is there to help carriers realize greater revenue and reduce both operating and capital expenditures. OpVista is based in Milpitas, CA. For more information, visit opvista.com/.
