OFS Announces Charter Membership in New Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA)

Norcross, Georgia, April 26, 2017 - OFS, a leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of innovative fiber optic products, announced today that it is a founding member of the newly-established Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA).

FOSA’s mission is to educate industry, government and the public on the benefits of cutting-edge fiber optic sensing technology and its application in today’s marketplace. As part of this awareness campaign, FOSA has launched a new web presence (www.fiberopticsensing.org) which features articles, information and educational content about this technology and its impact.

“OFS has been committed to developing and providing specialty fiber optic solutions and services since its inception. We are excited by the founding of FOSA and its mission to help educate and firmly establish fiber optic sensing as a key, enabling element in solving many of the infrastructure challenges that we face today. OFS looks forward to actively working with other FOSA members to expand opportunities in fiber optic sensing in North America and beyond,” stated Mike Hines, OFS Market Manager for Industrial Sensing.

Fiber optic sensing is an emerging technology that uses deviations of light in fiber optic cables to routinely measure acoustics, temperature and strain. This technology may help an individual to detect pipeline leaks, vehicle traffic, foot traffic, digging, tunneling, seismic activity, unsafe temperatures, crumbling infrastructure and other conditions from miles away. Fiber optic sensing is used today to help monitor thousands of miles of power lines, pipelines, international borders, critical infrastructure and facilities across the world. It also has applications in transportation, security, oil and gas, energy, military and medical industries.

The Fiber Optic Sensing Association is an affiliate of the not-for-profit Fiber Broadband Association, which promotes the benefits of fiber optic networks and seeks to advance the deployment and use of these networks for a wide range of uses including sensing, telecommunications, Internet and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).

While FOSA’s inaugural membership meeting will take place in Washington, D.C. during May 2017, the Fiber Broadband Association will hold its 2017 Fiber Connect conference in Orlando, FL, June 12-14. Fiber Connect is North America’s largest annual Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) industry event.
