Nominum Strengthens QSC AG Network Resiliency and Supports Capacity for Growth

German Telecommunications Provider Selects Nominum Foundation Caching Name Server for Enhanced Security and Scalability Capabilities Required for Expansion

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Oct. 16 - Nominum, the leading provider of network naming and addressing technologies, announced today that German telecommunications provider QSC AG has selected Nominum's Foundation Caching Name Server (CNS) to replace its BIND 9 servers in order to meet its commitment to provide resilient, high-performing broadband data and voice services to its customers.

The amount of DNS traffic doubles each year. With growth are growing pains as well; networks are experiencing a higher frequency of viruses and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. As one of Germany's competitive broadband network operators, QSC is devoted to providing secure and responsive telecommunications services to its customers, which include large enterprises, businesses, residential customers and ISPs that resell high speed data and Voice over IP (VoIP) services. In addition to DDoS-type attacks, viruses and worms often flood DNS servers as they attempt to infect systems before security software can react.

Keeping its hardware and network the same, QSC tested CNS in the production environment and found that the transition was transparent to their users and the peak CPU utilization immediately dropped from 85 percent to 10 percent. This rapid decline convinced QSC that Nominum's solution could not only increase their resilience to attack, but would increase overall capacity as well.

"When evaluating multiple DNS solutions to replace our BIND 9 servers, we found no significant performance improvements in the alternatives -- until we tested Nominum's Foundation CNS," said Christian Ebert, Head of Security Services, QSC. "In less than a year, we have been able to handle a 200 percent traffic increase without incident or slow-down. It's clear to us that without Nominum's carrier-grade CNS, we would be having significant problems by now."

"The Internet is both a tremendous opportunity and a significant challenge for companies like QSC that stake their businesses on it," said Tom Tovar, chief executive officer, Nominum. "Nominum's Foundation CNS helps reduce the risk of malicious traffic and its unintended affects by providing secure, powerful caching DNS capabilities to absorb traffic spikes without ill effect. With a stalwart DNS infrastructure in place, QSC can continue its growth and expansion while providing high quality service to its customers."

Nominum's Foundation CNS is a highly resilient solution that absorbs traffic spikes that impair other servers. CNS offers consistent, low-latency performance even under heavy loads. It also supports interactive reconfiguration without interruption, so administrators can react to attack situations in real time.
