NCC Launches Hands-On Composites Training Programs for Manufacturers and Industry Professionals

Dayton, Ohio - The National Composites Center (NCC) announced today that it has developed a series of training courses designed to meet the unique needs of composites industry professionals. The courses will be held at the Center on a quarterly basis and are especially suited to entry level manufacturers, resin suppliers, compounders, composite molders, sales representatives and other individuals interested in working with the material. Companies looking to use composites to move into new markets or incorporate advanced materials into current products will receive hands-on exposure in commercial scale composite processing.

Understanding Composites, a 3-day course, will be held July 11 to 15 and October 10 to 14. The course will provide a basic understanding of composites combining classroom theory with instruction in hand lay-up and Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding. Course capacity is 14 participants. Composites Production Processing is a 4-day course designed to introduce participants to resin fiber processing with Sheet Molding Compound, Long Fiber Thermoplastics, tape line, Rapid Fiber Preforming, filament winding as well as hand lay-up and physical testing. The course is limited to seven participants and will be held July 18 to 22 and October 17 to 21. High-End Processing is scheduled for July 25 to 29 and Oct. 24 to 28. The 4-day class will offer participants a better understanding of VARTM, autoclave and out-of-autoclave processing. Class capacity is limited to seven participants.

Over the last decade NCC has acquired buildings and equipment totaling nearly $40 million for a wide range of advanced materials processes and capabilities. "In today's economic landscape, the majority of organizations don't have the internal resources to commercialize new products or the unique field knowledge and expertise required for designing and manufacturing with advanced materials," said Lisa Novelli, President of NCC. "Our program not only gives key personnel an understanding of composites and the methods involved in production and high-end processing, but can significantly reduce the training burden on businesses interested in integrating the performance advantages of composites."
