MITA's Andrew Northup Named 2016 IEC Young Professional
Director of global affairs at MITA selected as winner of prestigious USNC competition
ROSSLYN, Va.—Andrew Northup, director of global affairs at the Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA), a division of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), has been selected to attend the 2016 International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Young Professionals Program, which will take place on October 10–14, 2016, in Frankfurt, Germany, in conjunction with the IEC General Meeting. Northup is one of only three winners selected to represent the United States through a competition held by the U.S. National Committee (USNC) of the IEC, for which the USNC received a record number of submissions from the U.S. electrotechnical arena this year.
“Andrew consistently demonstrates outstanding leadership and dedication to standards and conformance work, and we are very proud of him for this well-deserved recognition,” said MITA Executive Director Patrick Hope. “We are pleased that he will be representing MITA, NEMA, and the United States in Frankfurt.”
The selected young professionals will have the opportunity to learn standardization strategies and conformity assessment, attend technical standards development meetings, and take advantage of extensive international networking opportunities. In addition, participants will be able to visit local industry, receive guidance from a mentor, and observe a meeting of the IEC Standardization Management Board and Conformity Assessment Board. They will be financially supported for the expense of their travel to Frankfurt and three nights of accommodations.
Northup manages MITA’s work on global regulatory harmonization, technical, and market access issues, and he serves as the U.S. secretariat for DITTA, the Global Diagnostic Imaging, Healthcare IT, and Radiation Therapy Trade Association. In addition, Northup oversees MITA’s Ultrasound and MR Sections and is secretariat for the TC 87 US TAG. Prior to joining MITA in 2013, Andrew worked on international trade and regulatory and commercial policy issues at the British Embassy, Inter-American Development Bank, and the Coalition for Service Industries and as a staffer for Congressman Leonard Boswell (D-IA). Originally from Iowa, Andrew earned a B.A. in Political Science and Spanish from Central College and worked in community outreach at Ottumwa Regional Health Center and River Hills Community Health Center.
The IEC Young Professionals Program was developed as a way for the IEC and its national committees to reach out to the younger generation of experts, managers, and leaders and encourage their long-term participation in standardization and conformity assessment activities. This helps ensure continuity in the availability of high-quality experts, enabling the commission to maintain its focus on responding to market needs on a long-term basis. Participants are generally engineers or managers, aged early 20s to mid-30s, working in an industry or business relevant to the IEC and with some experience in standards development or conformity assessment.
