Marathon Leaders Gordon Shaw and Bill Wilkerson Elected Chairmen of Major Trade Associations

Washington, D.C. - Two national trade associations have elected leaders from Marathon Equipment Company to serve as the chairmen of their respective boards. The Environmental Industry Associations (EIA) recently elected Gordon Shaw as Chairman of its Board of Trustees. And the Waste Equipment Technology Association (WASTEC) recently elected Bill Wilkerson as Chairman to its Board of Governors.

EIA is the trade association that represents the American private sector solid waste and recycling industry through its two sub-associations, the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) and WASTEC. WASTEC represents companies that design, build, distribute, service and consult with respect to the equipment and technology systems that are used to collect, contain, transport, store, process, recycle, treat and dispose of the world's solid wastes and recyclable materials.

Shaw became President of Marathon Equipment Co. in 2003, a company that he joined in 1981 as a sales person. Shaw entered the waste business immediately after college, starting a hauling company with his college roommate. In addition to serving on the EIA Board of Trustees, he has been a very active WASTEC member, serving as the chairman for its Board of Governors for two terms and helping to develop ANSI standards for waste equipment safety. In 2006, he was inducted into the EIA Hall of Fame, an honor reserved for select industry leaders, who during the course of at least 25 years have made significant contributions to both the industry and their community.

Wilkerson brings 28 years of leadership experience to his new role with WASTEC. He brought a 'team-player' dynamic with him when he joined Marathon Equipment as a sales person 18 years ago after spending ten years in the education field as a high-school biology teacher and football coach. As the current Vice President of Sales and Marketing with Marathon, Wilkerson continues to advocate innovation and focus on lower environmental impact through green initiatives for the waste industry.

Bruce J. Parker, NSWMA's President and CEO, stated, "I am pleased that Gordon and Bill have agreed to serve in leadership roles on the EIA Board of Trustees and the WASTEC Board of Governors. They exemplify the best qualities found in the leaders of our member companies. Gordon and Bill - like the other men and women of America's solid waste industry - provide essential services that help maintain the fabric of local communities across the country by protecting the environment and public health."

Headquartered in Vernon, Alabama, Marathon Equipment Company is a leading manufacturer of on-site waste compaction and recycling systems. The company, which was started in an abandoned service station in Birmingham in 1967, now has manufacturing facilities in Vernon, as well as in Nevada and Pennsylvania.

The new board terms start in January 2009. Members of both boards are eligible to serve for six years; although, they must be re-elected annually.
