Keeping a Running Average Using a dataTaker Data Logger

Selectively Average Your Data with Series 3 DT8x Data Loggers

CHESTERLAND OH – CAS DataLoggers is pleased to announce that dataTaker has released the beta version of their latest firmware update for Series 3 dataTaker data loggers. Firmware version 9.10.4890 includes several bug fixes and also contains a useful function which lets users more easily keep a running average (also known as a sliding average) of their data. When users are logging at multiple data points, this command will selectively calculate the average, so this form of averaging follows the data more closely. This is especially useful in applications such as smokestack monitoring of effluent gases by taking data from gas monitors, monitoring flow rate, logging from sensors using a 4-20 mA signal, etc. For example, this feature is used in the ARROW Tsunami Detection System developed in part by Mooring Systems Inc. which utilizes a dataTaker Environmental Data Logger as part of its design. All our new dataTaker data loggers are being shipped with the new firmware, enabling users to get a quick start on these types of applications.

The new version has added a Running Averages Channel Option so users can selectively eliminate spikes and other bad data points when they're logging at several monitoring points that would otherwise be averaged in with the rest of their data. The dEX software has had this capability for a while, and now it's even easier for users to program. In this way, dataTaker can simultaneously perform running averages on up to 100 channels and maintain up to 3600 values in a sliding window.

To delete collected running averages statistics, users can enter the DELRSTAT command in the built-in dEX software. This command resets the last data averaged so users can then setup another data set to average.

These intelligent data loggers also have powerful alarm and programming capabilities allowing them to process measurements and initiate actions on their own. For example, dataTaker DT8X loggers can send and receive data via MODBUS which allows them to aggregate data from PLCs, control systems, and even other dataTaker systems. They can communicate via Modbus over USB, RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, and Ethernet. Along with their USB memory stick ports, this gives users the choice to connect locally, remotely, or over the Internet. With the correct network setup, users can remotely monitor the dataTaker DT80 from anywhere in the world using the FREE dEX software's built-in web interface. This allows users to configure the datalogger, access logged data, and see real-time measurements as mimics or in a list using a web browser.
