James D. Garraux Elected General Counsel of U. S. Steel


Joins Thomas W. Sterling in assuming additional duties

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 6 -- United States Steel
Corporation (NYSE: X) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John P. Surma
announced today that James D. Garraux has been elected general counsel and
senior vice president-labor relations & environmental affairs, effective
Feb. 1, 2007.

Garraux, who currently serves as vice president-labor relations,
succeeds Dan D. Sandman, 58, as general counsel. Sandman's retirement as
the company's vice chairman and chief legal & administrative officer was
announced earlier today. Garraux also assumes responsibility for
environmental affairs and joins U. S. Steel's Executive Management
Committee. Craig D. Mallick, who was elected secretary of the corporation,
will report to Garraux.

In addition, Thomas W. Sterling, who currently serves as senior vice
president-human resources & business services, has been elected senior vice
president-administration, effective Feb. 1, 2007. He will assume additional
responsibilities including Public Affairs and certain other administrative
functions. Sterling remains a member of U. S. Steel's Executive Management
Committee.

"In addition to his wealth of legal experience in labor and employment
matters, Jim thoroughly understands the intricacies of our industry," Surma
said. "He has played an integral role in our business activities for the
last several years and is extremely well-prepared for this assignment."

Garraux, 53, graduated magna cum laude from Duke University in 1975
with a bachelor's degree in political science. He earned his law degree in
1978 from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he was elected
to the Law Review.

He began his career at U. S. Steel in 1979 in the labor arbitration
section of the corporate labor relations department. He moved through a
series of increasingly responsible assignments before being named
manager-labor arbitration in 1987. In 1990, he was named director-labor
arbitration. He became general manager-labor relations the following year
and was appointed general manager-employee relations in 1996.

Garraux was promoted to the position of vice president-employee
relations in 2000, and in June 2003, he was named vice president-labor
relations. In these capacities, he has served as the company's chief labor
negotiator and has directed its safety and industrial hygiene activities.

He has served as a member of the Governor's (Pa.) Committee on Economic
Development Through Labor-Management Partnerships. He is a member of the
Tri- State Construction Users Association and the Allegheny County Bar
Association. He also is a member of the executive committee of the Three
Rivers Area Labor Management Committee and a director of the Southwest
Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Sterling, 59, began his career with U. S. Steel in 1969 at U. S.
Steel's Fairfield (Ala.) Works in the operating, personnel services and
commercial departments. Since 1975, he has progressed through various
employee relations positions including vice president-labor relations,
steel and related resources for the former U. S. Steel Group of USX
Corporation and vice president-employee relations. Sterling was responsible
for several of U. S. Steel's joint venture operations with foreign steel
companies including USS- POSCO Industries and PRO-TEC Coating Company. In
2000, he was elected president of Transtar, Inc., now a wholly owned
transportation subsidiary of U. S. Steel. He has served as senior vice
president-human resources since 2003, and in October 2004, his area of
responsibility was expanded to include Business Services.
