Curbell Plastics Wins Environmental Excellence Award at IAPD Convention & Plastics Expo

Curbell Plastics, Inc. was honored to receive an Environmental Excellence Award from the International Association of Plastics Distribution (IAPD). At the recent IAPD Convention & Plastics Expo, held in Chicago on Oct. 23-26, Curbell was recognized for having the 'Most Improved' Environmental Sustainability program. The IAPD Environmental Committee established the IAPD Environmental Excellence Award in 2009 to recognize innovative or exemplary environmental responsibility by a member firm. Curbell was selected as a result of implementing a multi-pronged approach to reducing the company's impact on the environment and protecting natural resources for future generations.

One of Curbell's key sustainability achievements has been attaining zero landfill status at the company's two largest facilities in Orchard Park, N.Y. Other successful initiatives include:

· Curbell has been nominated to represent businesses and to assist New York State in Governor Cuomo's "Cleaner Greener New York" campaign.

· Since 2008, when Curbell began tracking its recycling using the EPA's WasteWise program, the company has increased materials recycling from 212.59 tons per year in 2008 to 391.3 tons in 2011.

· In 2011 Curbell began purchasing environmentally friendly janitorial supplies, including some items made out of post-consumer waste.

· The company has begun donating used office furniture and recyclable beverage containers to charitable organizations.

The benefits to Curbell for reducing its carbon footprint by recycling have been numerous. The recycling effort has created an additional revenue stream, the company was able to save $4,000 annually by eliminating fax lines at the corporate headquarters, and new print management project is expected to save $250,000 over the next five years. Energy reduction projects are currently in progress at three warehouses, and the installation of a new HVAC system at corporate headquarters is expected to reduce Curbell's energy consumption by 25-30 percent.

Senior Environmental Health and Safety Manager Mark Shriver has been instrumental in Curbell's environmental initiatives. Shriver notes that "At Curbell the goal of our environmental committee is to teach and practice sustainability, both to ourselves and to other companies. Curbell is committed to embracing environmental sustainability principals in order to reduce costs and improve the communities in which we live and do business."
