Original Press Release:

CAS and Obiter Research form a Multi-Year Collaboration to Provide SciFinder® to their Research Team

Scientists at Obiter Research once again have access to the most accurate, comprehensive and current research, only available in SciFinder.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), the world's authority for chemical information, today announced a collaboration with Obiter Research, a custom contract chemical research and manufacturing company, to provide SciFinder, the choice for chemistry research, for the Obiter research staff, resuming their access to the most accurate, comprehensive and current source of chemical and related scientific information.

Obiter Research specializes in complex, multi-step synthesis of custom chemical compounds for pharmaceutical, agrochemical and biotechnology companies as well as academic institutions. With exceptionally high success rates in difficult process and preparative chemistry, Obiter is expanding the contract manufacturing branch of its business.

"SciFinder is one of the most important tools we have," said Dr. William Boulanger, chairman and executive chemist at Obiter.  "When developing synthesis plans, we need access to more than just the most recent work on a compound.  The latest synthesis method is not always the best choice for our purposes."

According to Dr. Boulanger, it is often necessary to refer to publications dating as far back as the 19(th) century.  Therefore, access to content available only on SciFinder, with extensive coverage of past scientific publications, is essential. Obiter's scientists use the vast database content to their advantage, evaluating synthesis methods, experimental procedures and property data as well as accessing the original, full-text references. They pass this benefit on to their clients, finding the best way to make a substance in order to give customers the best possible price.

Obiter is also expanding its chemical product lines which range from pharmaceutical intermediates to monomers to radionucleotide chelators. In support of this effort, Obiter is a participating supplier in CHEMCATS(®), an essential source of commercially available chemicals from suppliers worldwide.  Available through CAS products such as SciFinder and STN(®), CHEMCATS increases visibility of Obiter products among potential buyers and gives them convenient, point-of-need access to product and purchasing information.

Originally a SciFinder customer, Obiter briefly used alternative sources for chemical information but quickly determined that these had large shortcomings and were inadequate for their research needs.

"We are pleased to provide Obiter access to content with the depth of coverage they need to successfully serve their markets and grow their business," said Christine McCue, vice president of marketing at CAS. "We consider their return to be a testament to the unparalleled value of our databases and SciFinder.  We're proud that they consider us to be a vital resource for their rapidly expanding business."

About CAS

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), a division of the American Chemical Society, is the world's authority for chemical information. CAS is the only organization in the world whose objective is to find, collect and organize all publicly disclosed substance information. A team of scientists worldwide curates and controls the quality of our databases, which are recognized as the most comprehensive and authoritative by chemical and pharmaceutical companies, universities, government organizations and patent offices around the world. By combining these databases with advanced search and analysis technologies (SciFinder(®) and STN(®)), CAS delivers the most current, complete, secure and interlinked digital information environment for scientific discovery.
