Andaz Hotel Opens In West Hollywood: Hip, Chic With Plenty Of Boutique

The Sunset Strip's Former "Riot House" Is Well Worth a Second Look

LONG BEACH, CA (March 19, 2009)-The new trend in upscale hotels is hip, chic with plenty of boutique. All of the major hotel chains are upscaling their models so that they do not all look the same. In fact, it has been found that today's traveling public does not mind spending a little bit more for hotels provided there is a distinguishing difference from the norm. They want luxury and state-of-the-art at prices they can afford. The Hyatt Hotel chain has responded to this trend by re-branding some of its existing Hyatt Hotels into the Andaz name. The first Andaz premiered in London in 2007. Recently, the first Andaz appeared in this country, where else, but on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California? At the site formerly known as the "Riot House" in West Hollywood because of the wild rock 'n' roll crowds that it attracted, the 14-story, 257-room Andaz was born.

Lombardi Construction was contracted to provide the old hotel, now more than 55 years young, with a complete facelift. From the exterior fascia, the lobby and lounge areas and the restaurant, the hotel has a completely different look and feel. Paragon Steel of Long Beach was contracted by Lombardi Construction to provide the architectural upgrades with stainless steel stairways, lobby effects and even a wine rack that covers the entire lobby wall. The goal of designer Janson, Goldstein LLP was to create smart space planning, three-dimensional design and sophisticated color palettes.

This past month, I visited the new hotel for lunch. I entered through the lobby entrance and was immediately met by a hotel employee who greeted my group and directed us to the restaurant. The kitchen was openly constructed to be in the center of the eating areas. The seating area was contemporary, but comfortable. The service and food exceeded my expectations. Hyatt is planning another hotel in New York later this year, with future locations in Austin and San Diego. But the old Hyatt on Sunset was a hotel you could hardly remember. The new Andaz makes it well worth another look.
