Air Products Names Winner of Second Annual Faculty Excellence Award


Company Continues to Recognize Outstanding, Emerging University Researchers

LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa. (September 25, 2006) - Air Products (NYSE:APD) has named Dr. Yang Shao-Horn, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the winner of its second annual Faculty Excellence Award. The program recognizes outstanding, emerging faculty in technology areas strategic to the company's long-term growth and carries with it a $30,000 unrestricted gift for MIT to further Prof. Shao-Horn's research in electrochemical energy systems.

"Her research links closely with existing and emerging needs of our Performance Materials portfolio, such as the development of new electrolyte salts for advanced lithium ion batteries."

Dr. Shao-Horn's research group at MIT, the Electrochemical Energy Laboratory, works on the science and engineering of electrochemical energy systems such as batteries and fuel cells. She received her Ph.D. in metallurgical and materials engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1998 and subsequently worked as a material scientist in battery research for Eveready Battery Company.

This year's Faculty Excellence Award winner was selected from six nominees by Air Products' Technology Board, comprised of senior scientists and engineers across the company. Nominations were open globally to emerging faculty conducting research in one of five technology areas: material science; CO2 separation; hydrogen production; healthcare; and sustainable energy . Candidates could be nominated by any member of the Air Products technical community.
