AASHTO Board Approves New Six-Year Strategic Plan

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Board of Directors of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) today approved a new Strategic Plan for the organization. The 2014-2019 Strategic Plan envisions AASHTO supporting its membership through policy development, advocacy, technical services, leadership training and partnership development.

The plan's overarching goal is to advance transportation solutions that create economic prosperity, enhance quality of life, and improve transportation safety and mobility in America. The plan, developed under the guidance of a Strategic Plan Update Committee consisting of executives from 17 state departments of transportation, was drafted with significant member input that included a detailed survey of AASHTO members, interviews with state DOT executive leaders, AASHTO staff, partner organizations and other stakeholders.

"This is the ideal time to look forward and make sure AASHTO is providing the highest level services to DOTs as we focus on delivering transportation solutions across the country," said outgoing AASHTO President Mike Hancock, Secretary of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Incoming 2014-2015 AASHTO President John Cox, Director of the Wyoming Department of Transportation, said, "This plan reflects our members' values, outlines the steps we'll take to advance those values and directs progress to be reported every step of the way."

The strategic plan establishes a clear framework for improvement through action-oriented strategies and practical guidance for AASHTO activities. The Strategic Plan focuses on four key goals:

Provide value to members;

Provide innovative technical and professional services and products;

Be a leader in national transportation policy development; and

Communicate the value of transportation.
