E-Commerce Debate Wages On In Welding & Gases Today

nexAir makes its case in the debate over the necessity of e-commerce.

Dewitt, NY - In the gases and welding industry, face-to-face selling has long been the standard of doing business. But with the pervasiveness of the Internet, many of the traditional brick-and-mortar distributors in the industry are faced with the question of whether an e-commerce site is necessary, or even beneficial. nexAir (Memphis, TN) eCommerce manager Patrick Galphin describes the benefits his company his gained from its adoption of e-commerce in "Making the Case for E-Commerce." His article appears on Welding & Gases Today Online, the online home of the leading magazine for the gases and welding equipment industry.

nexAir first looked into e-commerce four years ago, feeling that it was time to adapt to technological advances. "After gaining insight from our staff and customers, nexAir determined that e-commerce would in fact provide helpful benefits for both the company and our customers," he says. "Our approach was to give customers another tool to help with their entire order cycle while making our overall business model more efficient."

Along with giving customers access to orders and invoices at all hours, one of the someone unexpected benefits of e-commerce has been an increase in route efficiencies for cylinder delivery trucks. Before nexAir implemented the e-commerce plan, the company's trucks primarily ran a "milk run'" route, stocked based on customers' order history. With e-commerce, customers now receive an email order reminder the day before the truck will be in their area "This system ensures our drivers know exactly what the customer will need for their delivery, and that nexAir is not handling cylinders more than necessary," says Galphin.
