Washington & Baltimore Area Reporters Invited to Media Day about New Climate Simulation Center
GREENBELT, Md. - News representatives in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore area are invited to attend a media day event on Wednesday, June 2 to learn about a new NASA climate simulation center -- an integrated set of supercomputing, visualization, and data interaction technologies that will enhance agency capabilities in weather and climate prediction research.
NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, located just outside Washington, D.C., is home to one of the largest contingents of Earth scientists in the world. With the climate simulation center, these scientists are undertaking research such as high-resolution global model simulations that produce cloud and hurricane features at groundbreaking fidelity, a comprehensive reanalysis of the last 30 years of weather and climate, and climate change projections covering decades to centuries.
Attendees of the media event at Goddard will have unique opportunities to tour and photograph facilities including an expanded supercomputer capable of nearly 160 trillion operations per second and a 17- by 6-foot multi-screen visualization wall showing high-definition movies of simulation results. Marking the start of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, the results will include interactive three-dimensional visualizations of Cyclone Ului's march through the South Pacific this past March. The entire wall will display a global simulation capturing the massive snowstorms that hit the eastern United States in February.
Scientists representing Goddard's Global Modeling and Assimilation Office and the Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City will describe the simulations as they unfold on the visualization wall. These scientists and simulation center experts will also participate in a Q&A session and be available for individual interviews.
