University of Trento hosts 2013 EPMA summer school.

Press Release Summary:

University of Trento hosted latest EPMA Powder Metallurgy Summer School, which took place on July 8-12 in Trento, Italy. During this time, 52 students were introduced to Powder Metallurgy and had opportunity to listen to, discuss, and solve problems with 25 PM experts. Lectures were complemented by laboratory facilities, where students learned about impact resistance of low alloyed PM steels, microstructural analysis and microhardness, and hardenability and sinterhardenability by dilatometry.

University of Trento Provided a Great Venue to Host a Successful 2013 EPMA Summer School

The University of Trento hosted the latest EPMA Powder Metallurgy Summer School, which took place on 8th – 12th July 2013, Trento, Italy.  The annual Powder Metallurgy Summer School, organised by the European Powder Metallurgy Association provided 52 students, from a variety of academic and industrial backgrounds, with an introduction to Powder Metallurgy (PM) by a number of highly regarded academics and industrial lecturers.

Professor José Torralba from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, coordinated the event in conjunction with Professor Alberto Molinari and his team from the University of Trento, with administrative support from Joan Hallward and Rachel Burton-Pye of the EPMA.

52 students from throughout Europe had the opportunity to listen to, discuss and solve problems with 25 PM experts drawn from both industry and academia.  Lectures were complemented by the University of Trento’s excellent laboratory facilities, where students learned about ‘Impact resistance of low alloyed PM steels’, ‘Microstructural analysis and Microhardness’ and ‘Hardenability and sinterhardenability by dilatometry’.

As part of the practical side of the event, the students visited two companies:  Mimest, who produce typical MIM parts, and Eurocoating, a medium sized company working in biomaterials, to be shown how the theory from the classroom is applied in industry.

Joan Hallward, Summer School Coordinator said ‘This year’s Summer School programme has benefited from University of Trento’s superb laboratory facilities and well located hotels.’ She went onto add ‘No Summer School would be complete without the now traditional Summer School dinner and song contest held on the last evening of the course at a local restaurant, where everyone sang to their heart’s content.’

Work on the 2014 EPMA PM Summer School is underway, with details being released later in the year via the EPMA website.

- The EPMA previously ran a series of Powder Metallurgy Training Courses from 2005 – 2008 through EU Marie Curie funding.

- In 2009 the EPMA decided to continue the programme of the Powder Metallurgy Summer Schools, funded through EPMA reserves to help foster and develop the next generation of future powder metallurgists.
