UL papers address enhanced HBSE testing and electrical insulation issues

NORTHBROOK, Ill., Feb. 7, 2011 - UL, a global leader in advancing safety, recently presented two white papers at the 2010 IEEE Symposium on Product Compliance Engineering, hosted in Boston, Mass. UL's participation in the symposium demonstrates the organization's ongoing contribution to engineers, technologists and technicians working in product safety.

The IEEE Symposium on Product Compliance Engineering promotes the exchange of ideas about product safety testing, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and FR related functions through the presentation of papers and tutorials. UL's first white paper, Applied Safety Science and Engineering Techniques (ASSET(TM)): Taking HBSE to the Next Level, was presented by Thomas Lanzisero, Senior Research Engineer at UL. The paper addresses the enhanced Hazard Based Safety Engineering (HBSE) testing capabilities provided by ASSET, a program that leverages the strength of HBSE principles by integrating them with other established safety science and engineering techniques.

UL's second white paper, Effects of High Frequency Stress on Air Insulation and Solid Insulation by UL Senior Project Engineer Flore Chiang, discusses the occurrence of partial air and solid electrical discharge and its impact on clearances, creepage distances and solid insulation.

"The innovative and collaborative spirit at last fall's symposium made it the perfect time to unveil these two new white papers," said Donald Talka, Chief Engineer at UL. "UL is proud to work closely with the IEEE and its members, and supports the group's mission of advancing technological excellence across the globe," he said.

The Applied Safety Science and Engineering Techniques (ASSET(TM)): Taking HBSE to the Next Level and Effects of High Frequency Stress on Air Insulation and Solid Insulation white papers are available on www.uluniversity.com/thoughtleadership.
