U.S. Safety Experts Invited to Participate in ISO/IEC Guide 51 Revision

Guidelines for the inclusion of safety aspects in standards last updated in 1999

A joint working group of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is now forming a committee of experts to participate in the revision of ISO/IEC Guide 51: Safety aspects - Guidelines for their inclusion in standards. As the U.S. representative to ISO, the IEC via the U.S. National Committee (USNC), and the ISO Committee on Consumer Policy (COPOLCO) via the Consumer Interest Forum (CIF), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites constituents to submit an expression of interest for nomination by August 27, 2009.

Guide 51 provides standards writers with guidelines for the inclusion of safety aspects when developing and discussing standards. It is applicable to any safety aspect related to people, property, or the environment, or a combination of one or more of these. Aimed at reducing the risk arising from the use of products, processes, or services, the Guide takes the complete lifecycle into consideration, including both the intended use and any reasonably foreseeable misuse.

At its 2008 meeting, COPOLCO recommended that Guide 51 be revised since it was last published in 1999 and, at ANSI's urging, that it focus on consumer product safety. COPOLCO also recommended the establishment of communication with the ISO/IEC/ITU-T Strategic Advisory Group on Security, as that group is working on a guide on the inclusion of security aspects in standards. The revision is proposed to be undertaken by a joint ISO/IEC working group that includes participation from the IEC's Advisory Committee on Safety (ACOS), COPOLCO, and relevant experts from impacted ISO and IEC technical committees.

U.S. constituents interested in participating in the revision of Guide 51 are invited to submit an expression of interest, along with a brief biographical statement of their qualifications to undertake this work, to James McCabe, ANSI senior director of consumer relations (jmccabe@ansi.org). Submissions must be sent by August 27, 2009, to be considered.
