Press release date: November 8, 2011

Leading manufacturer of industrial gas turbines participates in SDG&E's Cool Planet Program

SAN DIEGO - November 8, 2011 - Headquartered in San Diego, California, Solar Turbines Incorporated (Solar Turbines) leads the way in managing its energy and water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste, earning it recognition as an environmental leader under the Cool Planet Project sponsored by The Climate Registry and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E).

Working with SDG&E, Solar Turbines recently retrofitted its San Diego facilities with new air compressors, efficient motors, and lighting upgrades, to save over 700,000 kWh annually. These energy savings equate to 500 MT of avoided carbon emissions - equivalent to removing 100 passenger cars from the road - and qualify Solar Turbines to participate in the Cool Planet Project, SDG&E's energy efficiency and climate mitigation program.

"With SDG&E's help, these facility upgrades not only reduce our operating costs, but minimize our overall environmental impact," said Craig Anderson Solar Turbines, EHS Manager. "Cool Planet participation has proven valuable to our mission of measuring, managing, and reducing our energy and carbon emissions, better positioning us for success."

The Cool Planet Project is available to SDG&E business customers who install significant energy efficiency projects, and provides them assistance and recognition for measuring and managing their associated carbon emissions through The Climate Registry's voluntary GHG reporting program.

"SDG&E is committed to promoting energy efficiency as a key component of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping our customers reach their energy goals," said Ted Reguly, director of customer programs for SDG&E. "We are proud to join The Climate Registry in recognizing the significant energy and carbon reductions achieved by Solar Turbines."

Solar Turbines' environmental efforts include voluntarily tracking performance metrics for its energy use, greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), waste recycling, and water usage. Beyond measuring such resources, Solar Turbines is on track to meet its reduction targets, including a ZERO waste-to-landfill target by the year 2020. To help meet its GHG reductions targets, Solar Turbines has implemented a fuel reduction project for streamlining production testing of its turbine engines. In addition, Solar Turbines' products are helping customers reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions all around the world. Solar Turbines is also committed to continued technological advancements in its products that are designed to further improve fuel efficiency, increase the use of renewable fuels, and reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases and particulate matter.
