Former ARI president William G. "Woody" Sutton was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Aug. 3 to serve as the U.S. Department of Commerce's Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing and Services.
Sutton, who was nominated for the post by President Bush in May, will be sworn in later this week.
Sutton, a former U.S. Navy Rear Admiral, was ARI president from 2001 to February 2007. During his tenure at ARI, Sutton served as an officer of the National Association of Manufacturers' Council of Manufacturing Associations, and served on the Boards of Directors for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), North American Technical Excellence (NATE), the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology Institute (ARTI), the Clifford H. "Ted" Reese Scholarship Foundation, and was an active member of the U.S. Chamber's Committee of 100.
In the U.S. Navy, Sutton served as naval aide to President Ronald Reagan and director of programs in the Navy Office of Legislative Affairs.
