This can be a scary and stressful decision due to the numerous items to be considered. First your potential injection molder should be a financially stable company; you do not want to go through the process of transferring your precious assets just to have the company go belly up. Second make sure the injection molder has a documented tool transfer procedure. This procedure should include all steps the new vendor will take to ensure a smooth tool transfer and limit the loss of production.
Your potential new injection molder should establish a tool transfer team consisting of representatives from all appropriate departments. Therefore all personnel from engineering through production will be notified of your tooling project and learn what is expected before the tool arrives at their facility.
All pertinent information about the tools should be acquired from you and given to the new vendor for proper evaluation and inspection of the tools. This information would including drawings, mold specifications, part information, production information, quality information and any required value added information or auxiliary equipment.
It is important to make sure you discuss project time lines, expectations and frequency of project updates with your injection molder early in the tool transfer process so you remain in the loop at all times.
The new vendor should be required to perform FAIR's and CAP's for you to evaluate and approve before production runs begin to verify all parts conform to your specifications.
