Participants will be divided into teams and given agenda and lists of interests which will simulate perspectives of different stakeholders in standardization process for a new hypothetical technology. Team members will examine negotiation and leadership strategies used in standardization process, as well as system’s underlying mechanisms, before taking part in 3-phase evaluation.

Reminder: Standards Simulation Workshop to Be Held November 19 in New York City
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) would like to remind all interested individuals that a workshop simulating the experience of taking part in the process of creating voluntary consensus standards will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, in New York City. A similar simulation was held in October 2012, as part of ANSI’s World Standards Week (WSW) series of events [see related story].
The event will be held at the William E. Macaulay Honors College of the City College of New York and will make use of a standards simulation exercise, titled “Setting Standards: Exercise in Strategy and Cooperation in Standardization Process,” provided by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The workshop will be facilitated by Jorrit De Jong, a research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
Participants will be divided into teams and given an agenda and lists of interests which will simulate the perspectives of different stakeholders in the voluntary standardization process for a new hypothetical technology. Team members will examine the various negotiation and leadership strategies used in the standardization process, as well as the system’s underlying mechanisms, before taking part in a three-phase evaluation reflecting on the workshop.
The workshop is open to students or new professionals who have been involved in standardization work for three or fewer years; a small number of slots are still available.
